Classroom Pets

Classroom pets offer so many valuable learning opportunities. Having a classroom pet to care for, interact with, and learn more about can be a wonderful opportunity for children. There is no better way to observe the life cycle of an animal and gain real life experience.

Our classroom welcome our very first pets last week--Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. Care for Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches (MHC) is simple and inexpensive. They are scavengers, and as such eat whatever they find laying around their habitat. We feed them a variety of fruits or vegetables and some dry cat or dog food for protein. MHC don’t bite and this species is fairly slow and non-threatening to even very young children.

Students will have the opportunity to care for them (refill the water and food) and pet them. If you prefer not to have your child handle MHC, please let me know.
