Dear Parents,
Beginning first quarter, your child will be bringing home a letter list. There are five lists. Once they know all letters and sounds on the page, have him/her color the picture. We will assess them and send home the next list. The goal of these lists are to increase your child’s letter sound knowledge. After practicing these letters and sounds, your child should be able to look at each letter and give the correct name and sound. Once your child has mastered their letter sound lists they will receive their first list of sight words. These words are the most common words in the English language in order of frequency. Each list will contain 20 most commonly used words. The goal is to have your child memorize the words and fluently recall them. After practicing these words, your child should be able to look at each word and read it within 3 to 5 seconds.
You will find some ways to practice letters and sight words in the packet I send home. Once your child knows all the letters or sight words, have him or her color the animal and comment ready. When the list is returned, we will assess them and send home the next list. The letters and sounds that your child can identify are checked on the sheet or we will write passed.
Your child isn't required to know a specific amount of sight words in Kindergarten. Remember, make it fun and start with three words. Once one word is mastered, you can add in another word. Keep practicing the words they already know.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I appreciate your support as your child becomes a confident and successful reader!
