Mar. 28

Hi families,

I hope you have enjoyed your child's trackout. Believe it or not on Monday we return to finish up our last quarter of 1st grade. We will hit the ground running on Monday as we not only finish up our academic learning goals but also to start getting ready to be big 2nd graders. Amazing how fast this year has gone by.

Don't forget that Saturday is the Carnival here at Brassfield. Unfortunately I will not be in attendance :( It is family weekend at ECU and I will be going with my son since he is an upcoming freshman. I am sorry to miss all the fun.

A few reminders:

-Make sure your child is dressed for the day's weather. The spring can be so unpredictable.

-Please send your child with a healthy snack each day to keep their energy up.

-Don't forget to send your child with a refillable water bottle. We have awesome water filling stations here! No need to waste plastic water bottles.

-Please check your child's green Daily Folder each day for correspondences.

This upcoming week:

Letterland: We are starting Unit 21 and will work on two ways to make the long a sound /ai/ and /ay/. We are back to a new list on Monday's and tests on Friday's. Please make sure your child is reading their word list and story each day. Remember to time them for one minute each day and see how they get more fluent and accurate as the week goes on.

Reading: We will look back at fiction and focus on author's message, problem and solution, and retelling key details.

Writing: We will be reviewing all three types of writing we have learned this year (narrative, opinion and informational). We will review the purpose of each type of writing and the characteristics of each type. We will begin working on an end of the year project to share with upcoming Kindergartners too.

Math: We are working on attributes of 2 and 3D shapes and composite shapes. You will see homework coming home this week. Two pages will be on 2D shape attributes and one will be a 3D project for your child to do at home. Be on the lookout. Be sure to check the Daily Folder EVERYDAY.

Science: We are switching back to Science. We will be working on what plants and animals need to survive.

As always if you have any questions please don't hesitate to let me know.

Happy to be back!

~Mrs. Chern

Feb. 28

Hi families,

February is out and March is in. Just a reminder that we track out this Friday. We do not have school March 7-25. We return for our last quarter of school on March 28. I hope you get to enjoy some good family time together.

Did you know that Wednesday is Read Across America day? It is also Dr. Suess's birthday! We, of course, want to celebrate! I sent home a note in the daily folder about our plans. Your child is welcome to dress up as their favorite Dr. Suess character and bring in their favorite Dr. Suess book. Please do not go crazy getting costumes. Get creative a keep it simple. I have been a Sneech with a yellow t-shirt and a green star. I have been Thing 1 with a red t-shirt and a drawn in circle. I have been Cat in the Hat and worn a black shirt with white construction paper for the belly and a red and white paper hat. It does not need to be extravagant.

This week we will be finishing up lots of things for 3rd quarter so we can start fresh with Quarter 4 when we track back in.

In reading we will finish our Anna and Andrew Go To Carnival book by pretending to be a reporter and tell all about Carnival in Trinidad.

In writing we will finish our narratives and hopefully choose one to publish.

In math we will finish describing and drawing 2D shapes as well as start building composite shapes.

In social studies we will finish our unit on culture and talk about famous cultural Americans who have shaped and changed laws in our country using primary and secondary sources.

Let's have an awesome track out week!

Feb. 6

Hi families,

Hope you are enjoying this beautiful weekend. If you haven't already seen your child's 3/3/33 time capsule please check their bookbag. This week we celebrated Two's day on Wednesday. It was 2/2/22. Did you know on 3/3/33 your child will be a senior? Hard to believe, but it happens. I am actually going through it right now with my son. I thought it would be so fun for your child to open this time capsule as a senior and remember what they were like in 1st grade.

We have another chance to celebrate with 22's day on Tuesday. 2/22/22 it is "Tutu's and ties day" here at Brassfield school wide. I hope your child will participate. I'm getting my tutu ready now. :)

We are getting back on track with Quarter 3. The missed snow days and late arrivals put us a little behind. Interims will go home later this week. We will more than likely carry over some Quarter 3 standards into Quarter 4. Quarter 4 we have an extra week so we are covered.

This week...

Letterland: As you have noticed we are starting a new unit mid week. It will be like this for a little while until our days get straightened out. This week we will finish "blue magic" with -ce making the /s/ sound and -ge making the /j/ sound. We are also finishing our last cve with u-e. The spelling list went home last week. It would be great for your child to practice reading their unit story on the back of their list if you aren't already doing that. We have all students reading decodable texts based on their need so the more reading of stories they do the better.

Reading: We are starting a new unit that will coincide with social studies. We will be reading a non-ficiton first reviewing main idea, key details, asking and answering questions and comparing texts on the same topic.

Writing: We finished Informational Writing last week and I sent your child's work samples home with a letter. We are now circling back to Narrative Writing. We will be studying Ezra Jack Keats and using him as a mentor to write our next narrative.

Math:  We will finish up solving two digit addition using number lines this week and begin working on using the hundreds board to solve two digit addition. One standard is to mentally add and subtract 10 from a two digit number. I will send a hundreds board home with homework this week. Please keep this and hang it up somewhere so your child can use it to play the puzzle games I will send home and really see the pattern in the numbers.

Social Studies: We will being a unit on celebrating different cultures and how they have an impact on our communities. Next week we start with family traditions and then learn about traditions around the world. Did you know Groundhog's Day came from Germany? That is just one of the cool things we now know.

As a reminder Valentine holder's are due Friday. Your child is welcome to bring in cards for their classmates. Even if you don't want to do cards please help them make a valentine holder so they can receive valentines from their peers. All I will have is plastic grocery bags if they don't have something. It is more fun to have a decorated bag or box. Nothing too fancy just something with their name on it.

As always if you have any questions please let me know.

Nov. 15

Hi families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and got in some good rest time. The weather was amazing. I hope you are enjoying the colors of fall as much as I am.

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is the book fair. I am bringing students down from 1:00-1:30 to purchase books. If you already sent your money and list I have it. If you want me to take your child tomorrow, please send in money and their list.

Friday is picture make up day. If you needed photos redone please follow the directions on your child's picture packet.

This week our focus is:

Letterland: r blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, dr and tr) The list for this week is in your child's folder today. Be sure to read the list and story for 1 minute each day to see how your child gets faster and more fluent reading.

Reading: We are reading fiction and working on how to do a retell using key details from the text. We will also look at how author's use words to describe characters.

Writing: We are writing our first informational How To on a project we are working on. We studied How To's and know we need an introduction, materials list, steps with precise words and a closing.

Math: We are finishing up comparing word problems with a review of collecting and interpreting data.n

Social Studies: We are assessing knowledge of rights and responsibilities and will move into map skills.

I hope everyone has a great week!

~Mrs. Chern

Nov. 8

Hi families,

Just a reminder that this is a short week. We have off Thursday and Friday in observance of Veteran's Day and a charge up day following so we finish quarter 2 strong. Next week we are back to normal with a full 5 day week.

Interims went home Friday. Please check your child's folder. If you have questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me.

This week's focus is:

Letterland: We won't start a new unit. This week we will be reviewing all the tricky words we have learned. Our Tri Weekly assessment will happen on Wednesday.

Reading: We started a new text. It is perfect for introducing our new writing unit as well. It is a How To and we will go back to focus on non fiction standards. Mainly main idea, key details, asking and answering question and using text features.

Writing: We will be publishing our last opinion piece and digging into our next unit on Informational: How To writing. We will study How To books and then make something and then write a How To book that teaches others how to make it too.

Math: We are still working on word problems. We are focusing on comparison word problems.

Social Studies: We will focus on the rights and responsibilities of citizens in communities.

Happy Veteran's day to any of our families who serve in the military and thank you for your service. I know I personally appreciate you!

~Mrs. Chern

Nov. 1

Hi families,

Welcome fall! Wow! What beautiful weather we are having. We are starting week 5 of quarter 2 believe it or not. Interims will go home later this week. If you have any questions please let me know.

Just a reminder that next Thursday we have no school AND the county also added Friday as a non school day a few weeks ago. Please be sure to mark your calendar.

I have been pretty successful in being able to sign up for a time on Friday's to do library book check out. Please be sure your child brings their library books back by Friday so they can earn a BEAR ticket and get new books.

This week we will be working on:

Letterland: We are doing a Tri Weekly review. Your child only brought  home words this week. These are the tricky words we focused on the last three weeks and the spelling words are from our last three units focusing on "Best Friends At the End" (ss, ll, ff), s blends (sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw) and l blends (bl, cl fl, gl, pl, sl). Please have fun practicing these. Ideas: writing in soap in the shower, side walk chalk, using sticks in dirt, in jello, with playdoh, etc etc etc. Make it fun!

Reading: We finished our last book on our Science topic and are now switching to books to support our Social Studies learning. Our focus will be on nonfiction standards. We will focus on what we learn from pictures vs. text, how we can figure out unknown words and how to use the text to answer questions.

Writing: Thank you to all who read their child's opinion letters and gave them a response. This was a lot of fun reading how their words were powerful and can make a change. We will write out  last opinion piece this week. It is a surprise for Thanksgiving.

Math: We are moving to solving word problems again. We will review all our strategies. There are two homework paper this week. There are fish and tools to cut out for kids to use as manipulatives at home.

Social Studies: We are getting ready to focus on our next unit, Communities, Maps and Ways People Impact their Environment. This week we will focus on community and citizens.

Just a reminder to please make it a goal to read a book a day and color in your child's November reading log. We are looking to increase our percentage of families reading at home. So far we have Aug. 35%, Sept. 50%, Oct. 45%. Let's try to make it to 100%. Also, remember that if you don't use English at home you can still read in Spanish. That counts. Literacy is literacy in any language.

~Mrs. Chern

October 25

Hi families,

Wow! We are just sailing along here in Quarter 2 starting week 4 this week. We got to have a cultural arts program last week all the way from "down under" and we will have one tomorrow too! It is so nice to have these programs. Thanks to all who joined the PTA so that these programs that support the arts and academics can be brought to Brassfield.

Friday is book character dress up day. I did make an event in DOJO with some details. Please be sure to look at our class story. This is not a Halloween dress up day. Please do not send your child in their Halloween costume. Please be sure that your child dresses as a BOOK CHARACTER.

Here is what we are working on:

Letterland: l blends  (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl)

Reading: We started a new book and will focus on nonfiction, main idea and key details, and determining what we learn from text and what we learn from pictures.

Writing: Please be on the lookout later this week for a letter from your child. We have been working on opinion writing and they wrote about a change they would like at home. We finished writing today. We will revise, edit and publish and send them, hopefully, by Thursday. I ask that you read them and answer your child. I will provide paper and directions.

Math: Comparing 2 digit numbers. Homework on Wednesday writing about numbers and comparing them.

Science: Our performance task: We will be astronauts answering questions from Kindergarten students about misconceptions they have regarding earth and the universe.

Please be sure to send your child with a water bottle and snack each day. We have had a lot of leftover donations from last school year but we are nearing the end. When we are out I will not have snacks or water bottles to offer and I don't want to see disappointed children.

As the weather gets cooler please be sure to put your child's name on their jacket. So many kids have the same jackets and it can get very confusing when the kids take them off.

The October Reading Log is due Friday. Please be sure to send it in completed if you have been reading a book a day in October.

~Mrs. Chern

October 4

Hi families,

We had such an AWESOME first day back. Wow! I was impressed that the kids were so focused and ready to work.

This week we are reviewing Letterland units 7-9 so the Letterland sheet your child is bringing home is quite different. There are tricky words and spelling pattern words. I would recommend reading them each day for 1 min only. See how your child grows in words read. I would practice writing a few words each day. This doesn't have to be on paper. Make it fun. Do it with playdoh. Write them in soap on the shower wall, Use sidewalk chalk outside. Write them in dirt with sticks. Sky is the limit.

We started a new book for reading. It is actually a poem turned into a book. It connects nicely with our science unit. Our focus is on how texts and pictures tell what is happening in a story and clarify the meaning of unknown words. We will also focus on retelling.

We are starting opinion writing this week. Today we read a book and got a good idea of how we need to state our opinion and have lots of GOOD reasons to help persuade another to agree with us. We will use the playground equipment we invented last quarter to write an opinion piece to the PTA and Mrs. Costa about building what we created. I can't wait to get started.

No math homework this week. We are starting a new unit on place value. This week we are just working with 1 ten and some ones.

We started our new Science unit; Earth and the Universe. If you have a globe at home don't be surprised if your child asks for a flashlight to show how you can make day and night. :)

In your child's folder you will find our October reading log. I know today is the 4th so feel free to back log any books you read from Friday to today. Also, don't forget to send in your child's completed September reading log and Math track out challenge if you chose to participate. Don't forget to sign them. This is all completely optional.

If you purchased class pictures you will find them in your child's folder today so be on the lookout.

Report Cards will go home on Friday. If you would like to have a conference over Google Meet there is a box to check on the report card envelope. Please sign the envelope and return it. You only have to check the box IF you want a conference. I will send out a sign up genius to pick a day and time once I get envelopes back. Be on the lookout for the report card envelope on Friday.

Looking forward to a great first week back,

~Mrs. Chern

September 7

Hi families,

Believe it or not this is the last week of Quarter 1. Time sure has flown by. Please make sure you are checking DOJO. I have created events with days off and track out days so you can mark your calendars. We will track out Sept. 13-Oct. 1. We come back to school Monday Oct. 4.

I sent Scholastic catalogs last Friday. If you order online they will ship to your house super super super fast. If you prefer for me to do it, please have your form in by Friday. Books will be here when we track back in.

To culminate our science unit I thought it might be fun to test our force and motion with a water balloon toss. DO NOT TELL THE KIDS! I am planning to do this Friday. If you DO NOT want your child to participate please let me know. I can have them toss a bean bag instead of a water balloon. I just thought with the hot hot weather water balloons would be fun.

We are doing a lot of finishing up this week and final assessments for Q1 standards for ELA and Math. We are also publishing our last narrative and will complete our science performance task. If your child hasn't told you about the piece of playground equipment they are creating for our science performance task please ask them to tell you about it. We had to do research, draw a prototype, name it, describe how it moves, create a shopping list of  materials, add up an estimated cost and then finally... build it. Our last step is to write an opinion piece that will turn into  a commercial to convince Mrs. Costa and the PTA to build our piece of equipment. We are having soooooo much fun with this. I do think the opinion writing and commercial will run into quarter 2, but the prototype should be built before we track out.

Over track out I like to do a challenge. This time will be a math challenge for popsicles. I will send home the games and a QR code with directions for the games. These are completely optional. They are great ways to reinforce strong number sense. Also, they are games so they are fun. If your child ever claims to be "bored" over track out they are something they can do. Also, don't forget to read each day and color in an apple on the reading log that went home Sept. 1st.

Just a reminder, let me know if you prefer for your child to NOT practice using force and motion with water balloons. If I do not hear back I will assume you are okay with it.

~Mrs. Chern

Week of August 23

Hi families,

Please be sure to check your email each day this week. We kicked off our Apex Fundraiser today and you will get daily correspondences from them via email.

Just as a reminder we will check out new books on Friday so please send your child to school with their book to exchange by then. I did set up a reminder event in DOJO. You should get an alert the day before.

This is what we are working on this upcoming week:

Letterland: reviewing CVC words with all the short vowel sounds as well as learning /ch/ and /qu/.

Reading: We will learn how to do a quick draw and write and how to ask questions. We will also take our assessment for this week's book and start next week's book on Friday.

Writing: Practice strategies for spelling words when writing.

Math: Solving word problems using a variety of strategies.

Science: Magnets and how to move objects without touching them.

It's going to be a great week!

~Mrs. Chern :)

Week of August 16

Hi families,

Week 5 is complete! And so are interims. Your child will bring their interims home today. This is just letting you know which standards we have taught AND assessed thus far. We have taught more standards but not all has been assessed yet. Also, many of these standards are retaught throughout the year so if your child received a 2/1 just know we are only 5 weeks into school and have a whole school year ahead of us to master all the standards. If you have questions about the interim please don't hesitate to ask. Send me a DOJO note or email.

Also attached to your child's interim is their Mclass Home Connect letter. This shows how they did on assessments given at the end of last month and it gives you ideas for things you can do at home to support your student.

Be sure to read both sides of the interim and Home Connect since there in information on both sides.  If you are wanting more ideas to work on at home or about the curriculum on our class website under the resources tab there is information for handwriting, ELA and Math. Here is the link to our site if you have not checked it out.

https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/mrs-chern1stgrade/resources

Since Media is not our special for the next few weeks I have blocked out time on Friday's to take the students to the library to get new books. I was thinking Friday would be an easy day to remember to bring books back. I will put a reminder in DOJO to help us all get into that habit.

This upcoming week we will be working on:

Letterland: the short /u/ sound and making short CVC words as well as Sammy Snake (the /s/ sound) and Sleepy Sammy Snake (the /z/ sound) and how they change words to mean more than one.

Reading: We will take an assessment on the book we read this week. The focus for our next book will be to discuss books that tell stories versus those that tell information and how to look back into texts to answer questions.

Writing: We will start our next unit and zoom in more closely to one event that we will write about. We will also look at other authors to find fun and exciting ways to start our own narrative stories.

Math: We will continue to work on word problems and figuring out what type of information we are given. We are learning about part-part-whole and seeing if the information we are given is a part or a whole. No homework this week for math.

Science: We will explore ways to balance objects and using the force of magnets to move objects.

Just a quick reminder to please make sure you are sending your child in with a water bottle. It will be a little cooler next week but it is still hot out. Plus with the masks we tend to drink more throughout the day to stay hydrated. Also, we did not have any chalk donations so we are still collecting. We are down to only a few pieces in our bucket so if you have any to spare we would love them here at school.

Have a super weekend!

~Mrs. Chern

Week of August 9

Hi families,

We are getting ready to start week 5 of 1st grade which means....interims. They will go home this upcoming week. This will let you know how your child is progressing through the standards so far. Just a reminder that a lot of these standards are taught and retaught throughout the year, so if your child receives a 1 or 2 don't panic. Just know that is something we need to continue to work on.

The kids have loved the cooler hot weather this week. We have been bringing out the chalk and as you can imagine it is a big hit. If you would like to donate something to our classroom we would love more sidewalk chalk.

It was brought to my attention that my website link on my email was not working. I fought with it and fought with it and finally won! Yea! It should be working now. If it doesn't please let me know. Mrs. Chern 1 Technology 0 :)

This upcoming week we will be working on:

Letterland: short CVC word with the /e/ sound and the digraph /wh/

Reading: We will be reading fiction and looking for words that tell feelings. We will also be focusing on a lot of speaking and listening standards of having back a forth conversation and building on other ideas.

Writing: We chose a narrative piece of writing that we are going to "fancy" up with revising and editing. We looked at the 1st grade narrative writing standards today and will fix a piece up next week to meet the standards and publish it using fancy paper and.... MARKERS!

Math: We will start word problems next week. The homework sheets are more for helping you to understand how we teach word problems so you can help your child next week with homework. We will approach word problems just like a story. What happened in the beginning, middle and end AND what am I trying to find out. I am also sending home some blank 10 frames and numbers 1-50 and 1-100. I would recommend cutting these out and putting them in a ziplock bag. When your child is looking for something to do let them pick a number from the bag and built it on the 10 frames with small objects like pennies, rocks, beads, pasta, etc. This is a great way to reinforce number recognition, place value and using an organized way to count big numbers.

Science: We will switch to our first science unit on Force and Motion. We will work with push and pull.

Thank you again for being an amazing partner in your child's education. We have such a sweet little class.

~Mrs. Chern

Hi again families,

Sorry forgot one more thing. Anyone interested in being a room parent or would two like to coparent? The PTA is wanting to start that back up this year. Anyone interested? Please let me know.

Have an awesome weekend!

~ Mrs. Chern ilies,

News for the week of July 26

Hi families,

What a beautiful weekend. I hope you enjoyed family time together. Just wanted to remind you that Friday is a Teacher Work Day so there is no school. If you are curious about other days we might be out of school I have them all listed in DOJO. You can check out our events to see them.

Here is what is in the plans this week:

Letterland: We will move onto short CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words with short i. Be sure to read the word list and unit story each night to see improvement in your child's reading.

Reading: We will focus on how characters change in stories and the central message. We will also start a new book focusing on Main Idea and Key Details.

Writing: We will work on adding feelings, dialogue and details into our narrative writing stories. We will study other authors and how they do it so we can then do it in ours.

Math: We will continue reading, writing and making sets for bigger numbers. Our focus will be on the teen numbers and how they all have 1 group of ten and leftovers. Homework will come home Tuesday and Wednesday for Math.

Social Studies: We will use primary and secondary sources to see how people in our history changed laws.

Thank you to all of your for sending your child in with charged computers each day. We have started working in Google Classroom and Discovery Education. I look forward to using more platforms and sites for the students to use. They are doing a great job with logging in :) The more we do it the faster they are getting.

Looking forward to Week 3 :)

~Mrs. Chern

News for the week of July 19

Hi families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I wanted to thank you all so much for consistently sending your child to school each day with their charged computer. I know this adds extra weight to the book bag and is one more thing to do each day but it is so greatly appreciated. This week we will being using Dreambox and dabble in Google Classroom so please continue to send those charged computers and headphones each day.

Here is what is in the plans for this week:

Letterland: We will continue to work with the short a sound and making CVC words. Thank you to all who had their child read the words on their spelling list for a minute each day. It was neat to see the tables filled out and how much growth happened throughout the week. This week's words and story will be in the daily folder tomorrow. Be sure to read the words and story each day and complete the daily activities. This will only help your child to internalize the spelling patterns.

Reading: We will finish up reading The Most Magnificent Thing and start a new Close Read with a book about pandas. We will work on retelling setting, characters, events and the author's message. We will also compare fiction and non fiction texts.

Writing: This week we will start using strategies for sounding out words, looking up high frequency words, adding detail, addition transition words and adding closure to a piece of writing.

Math: We will finish up graphing and do an assessment and then begin counting in organized ways. We will use ten frames and number lines this week. Counting homework will go home Wednesday. This is an activity that can be done multiple times at home. I suggest keeping a box or bag of repetitive activities and games so you always have something on hand to reinforce skills at school.

Social Studies: We will learn how rules are made, why rules are made and important people in history who helped change rules  using primary and secondary sources to gather information.

I'm looking forward to our second full week of 1st grade and starting to add in choices in activities as the routines and procedure we are learning become a habit and student can do them independently. Just a quick reminder to please make sure you continue to send your child with a water bottle and snack each day. It sure is hot outside! Fall can't get here to soon :)

News for week of July 12

Hi families,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. I can wait for us to start our first full week of school. Just a reminder to please send your child with a charged computer and their headphones. Also, if their white board is at home please send that in as well.

Also, remember to send in a water bottle everyday and a snack. We do have snack in the afternoon since our lunch is early at 11:15.

Next week we will start our academic units.

Letterland: The Letterland spelling list will come home Monday in the Daily Folder. We will study short a words. Note that at the bottom there are activities to do each day with the words. In addition there is a table. That is so you can set a timer for 1 min and have your child read the words on the list. Mark how many words they read each day and watch that number grow as your child builds fluency and accuracy.

Writing: We are going to start with Narrative writing and writing about something that happened to us. If possible please send in photographs that capture a moment in time to help with inspiration. We are working on this for the next 4 weeks so send them in during this time frame.

Reading: We will start learning about how to do a Close Read and a Language Dive. We will start with fiction stories. We will focus on things good readers do.

Math: Math homework will come home Tuesday and Wednesday. We are working on collecting data, organizing it, and asking and answering questions about it.

Social Studies: We flip between science and social studies. We will start with social studies. We will focus on historians and what what they do as well as laws and rules at school, home and in the community.

Can't wait to have fun learning this week.
