Mills Park ES adapted their own version of Battle of the Books, based on the North Carolina Elementary Battle of the Books, also known as eBOB. Each year we use the books list provided, and we hold a competition in the spring for all of the MPE students who participated in Battle of the Books. We do not participate in the county or state level.
BOB is open to motivated readers in 5th grade and 4th grade.
All practices take place from 8:00-8:45 in the MPE gym.

No, this is a competition at Mills Park Elementary School only. Although other schools in the state do participate in larger competitions.
READ the books!
Attend practices regularly (once they begin).
You can make up questions to ask your teammates.
You can complete graphic organizers to help you remember details.
You can record details in a journal or on sticky notes as you read.
You can subscribe to MyBOBTeam which has online practice. Each team receives a code to practice online. Some students have also purchased individual subscriptions.
You can reread the books you are assigned.
All questions start with the phrase, “In which book…”
Questions are specific detail questions, and there are strategies we teach participants to collaborate with their team to narrow down the choices and select an answer.
Here is an example: In which book does tomato soup slosh as a character's stomach does a somersault? Answer: Smells Like Dog by Suzanne Selfors
The answer to questions is always the title and author of one of the books.
We will practice A LOT to make sure you are ready!
They can help you students find access to the books, and help create a timeline to ensure all books are read in a timely manner.
We will also need parents to volunteer to help during practice, to help with ordering T-shirts and awards and on the day of the battle.
During the school day..
If you join Battle of the Books, reading all of the books is REQUIRED. Coaches will check in with teams periodically to monitor reading progress and offer assistance as needed. If you feel that you cannot read all of the books, then BOB may not be a good fit for you at this time. Please consider carefully. Teams rely on ALL team members to help answer the questions.
