FRENCH III HONORS SYLLABUS FALL 2023 – WAKEFIELD HS

Course overview: This course provides an intensive grammar study, which builds upon the foundation of grammar introduced in French level 2. Students will conduct an in-depth study of the French-speaking countries and their respective cultures, as well as the history of the French language and peoples. The course emphasizes language proficiency in aural-oral skills through reading, writing, and conversation.

Essential Outcomes:
§ I feel comfortable to introduce myself and answer questions about my name, age, & origin
§ I can discuss health-related issues and the impact of stress on the human body
§ I can discuss how to keep one healthy and safe in a changing environment
§ I can name and describe all the national holidays in France.
§ I can write comments, and express likes and dislikes in French on social media and networks.
§ I can recite 50 frequent verbs in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd groups in Imparfait, passé composé, futur simple, conditionel, and distinguish between the use of Imparfait vs. passé composé
§ I can describe and apply to small jobs available to teenagers in a French-speaking country
§ I can discuss about pollution and recycling issues then suggests solutions in French
Mode of communication with parents: School e-mail and Talking Points
Class expectations: Students are expected to:
- Speak French in class to the best of their ability (graded at some point)
- BRING a charged Chromebook, pencils, 1 ring binder or notebook at every class
- Abide by the Wakefield HS’s 15-15 rules (See prohibited behavior below)
- Be quiet in class, respect the learning environment (Respect yourselves and others
- Cheating gets you a ZERO
- Turn in assignments on time to avoid penalty (5 points) (See make-up work below)
- Seat in assigned seats unless otherwise permitted (No roaming around the classroom)
- Arrive on time and never miss classes unless you are sick or have emergencies
- Notify the teacher for future absences to arrange for make-ups
- Put away cellphones at the beginning of the class
- Late Work Policies:
- Teachers do not have to accept late work. In exceptional situations, students could have until one week prior to the beginning of the exam period for the grading term the latest to return late work with teacher permission. If able, students should check on google classroom for missed works during their absence and turn in assignments given prior to an absence.
- Make-up work:
- We will follow the WCPSS make up work policy: Assignments given prior to an absence will be due upon return; this includes tests scheduled for the day of the return. If work was not assigned in advance, for absences of 1-3 days, the student will have a minimum of 1 day for each absence to complete work. For absences exceeding 3 days, the student will have a minimum of 2 days for each absence to complete work.
- Retest Policy:
- Test or Quiz grades less than 80/100 can be retaken no later than 1 week after the graded assessments. They can be retaken for a possible 80 only after the student has come for remediation and filled out the appropriate retest form. Students may attend office hours to complete remediation and testing. Students will not be allowed to remediate and retest on the same day.
Retest Policy:
- Test or Quiz grades less than 80/100 can be retaken no later than 1 week after the graded assessments. They can be retaken for a possible 80 only after the student has come for remediation and filled out the appropriate retest form. Students may attend office hours to complete remediation and testing. WCPSS Honor Code:
Honor Code Policy (4310) states: “Academic honesty is essential to excellence in education and is directly related to the Board's educational objectives for students to promote integrity and self-discipline in students. As all schoolwork is a measure of student performance, academic honesty facilitates an accurate measurement of student learning. Each student, parent, family and staff member have a responsibility to promote a culture that respects and fosters integrity and honesty. Academic integrity and honesty require that all stakeholders share responsibility in the fulfillment of this policy.”
In fulfilling these responsibilities:
· students will collaborate with their peers to foster a culture of academic integrity; refrain from participating, either directly or indirectly, in any form of cheating or plagiarism; and adhere to the honor code.
· parents and family will actively support the honor code by encouraging their child(ren)to foster and uphold a culture of academic integrity.
· staff will establish and annually teach expectations regarding academic integrity and honesty; and promote the honor code.
Prohibited Behavior:
1. Cheating: Cheating is an academic deception where a student intends in some way to receive or attempt to receive credit for work not originated by the student, to give or receive unauthorized assistance, or to give or receive an unfair advantage on any form of academic work.
2. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is using passages, materials, words, ideas, and/or thoughts of someone or something else and representing them as one's own original work without properly crediting the source.
3. Falsification or Deceit: Intentional acts of falsification or serious deceitful misconduct that threaten the health, safety, or welfare of others, or that cause a substantial detrimental impact on school operations or other individuals are prohibited.
4. Phone-free zone: Use of cellphones during class is prohibited unless for educational use and by permission of the teacher. Students put away phones at the beginning of the class in designated racks.
By the end of this class students should be able to:
