In the fall of 2001, we lost Joyce Somers, a dedicated teacher who had been at Martin for 20 years, to cancer. Ms Somers’ knowledge of history was beyond compare. She loved her field of teaching. Her true love, however, was Student Council. For 18 years, countless hours were spent chaperoning dances, making decorations, organizing leadership workshops, and working on staff at state leadership camps. The time spent with Student Council was rejuvenating to Joyce; she always said that it was what kept her going year after year.
In her honor, the “Joyce Somers Award for Excellence in Leadership” was created. There are several criteria for this award. It may not be given to the president. It must be given to an executive council member that has provided “quiet service”, in other words, service without the thought of recognition. The recipient must show true enthusiasm for student council and its activities.
This is the highest honor one can receive for student government at Martin. A permanent plaque with all recipients’ names is displayed in the Student Council classroom
