Dr. Mash has taught Latin at Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, NC, since August 2002. He holds an MA and PhD in Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) from UNC-Chapel Hill and a BA in Classics and minor in German from the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated summa cum laude with special honors in Classics, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa as a first-semester junior, and was selected as a Junior Fellow. Dr. Mash holds North Carolina teaching certifications in Latin (9-12), Ancient Greek (K-12), English as a Second Language (K-12), and Social Studies (9-12).
He has studied abroad at the American Academy in Rome and at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Prior to his arrival at Leesville, he served as a teaching assistant for Mythology in Greek Literature (1998-1999) and as a Latin instructor (1999-2002) at UNC-Chapel Hill during his time in residence there as a graduate student.
In conjunction with his teaching, Dr. Mash serves as Advisor to the Latin Club and National Latin Honor Society. At the broader school level, he serves as a Mentor Teacher, School Website Director, School Social Media Manager, School Improvement Chair, and member of the Leadership Team. At the district level, he serves as a member of the Superintendent's Teacher Advisory Council (2016-2017, 2023-2024, 2024-2025, and 2025-2026).
Dr. Mash was the 2015-2016 Teacher of the Year for Leesville Road High School, and a Finalist for the 2016-2017 Wake County Public School System Teacher of the Year.
He has published essays on Herodotus in Routledge, Histos, and The Herodotus Encyclopedia (Wiley Press). At the invitation of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS), Dr. Mash has represented Classics PhDs working in public schools at the SCS's Joint Annual Meeting with the Archaeological Institute of America in Boston (January 2018), Washington, DC (January 2020), Chicago (Virtual Meeting, January 2021), and San Francisco (Virtual Meeting, January 2022).
He and his wife Carrie Mash (Leesville French teacher) have twin sons Ryan, a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Ethan, a junior at Yale.
