Grade 6

Art Elective News

Welcome grade 6 art elective students! This page serves as a convenient at-a-glance summary of our coursework every week for you and your parents. To see more about this course, go back to the Home Page and scroll down to Art Exploratory.

Although you are primarily accessing and completing your art assignments in our art room, it's important that you review this website for my updated weekly postings and agendas below. I will also be introducing a new Canvas home page with all my useful art links.

Here is my Newsletter that I handed out (link below) so that students know exactly how we are communicating in and out of the art room this year. You should check out your daily agendas even while you are in-person learning as your useful pacing and reference guidešŸ‘

To turn in your major projects for a grade, you will be uploading a quality photo, your title and an artist statement to your Artsonia Portfolio. We will go over this process in class. Your digital Artsonia portfolio is one of the best take-aways from your art elective since it will travel with you through high school graduation!

Parents: Want to see your child's artwork? Your children have a digital portfolio that they will keep up during our art class this quarter! Want to purchase gifts showcasing your child's artwork? Please view my Artsonia newsletter on the home page for details. Did you know that 20% of all keepsake purchases are donated to our art program for more art supplies? For more information, go to artsonia.com/parents

Inform your parents about Artsonia so they can sign up and see all the great work you're doing in Art once your portfolio is established. Parents: See my Artsonia Newsletter on the Home Page of this website!. Parents may see more at artsonia.com/parents OR students may go to their account via artsonia.com/class to log in and add parent email(s). Ask me for our school code if you need it.

TRACK 2 Week 2 Art Electives Agenda OCT 11 - 14

Contest Opportunities: I am sending a letter home explaining your classes' interest in taking advantage of at least a week of class time to produce a contest entry that also serves as a grade for the elective.

Most of you will work on a project based on the theme "Show Your Voice."

However, there is also the Cary Lions Club Peace Poster opportunity to choose. Make sure you make your decision by Tuesday October 11 so that you may stay on task in following our times line. Last class day to work on the project is Tuesday, October 18.

Day 1 - 4

Expectations: Begin putting your initial contest ideas in place by acquiring your materials, hands-on work each day, and being responsible for checking off your progress using our work log.

TRACK 2 Week 3 Art Electives Agenda OCT 17 - 21

Contest Opportunities: Most of you are working on a project based on the theme "Show Your Voice," and a few are creating an entry for the Lions Club Peace Poster Contest due on October 26!

The last class day to work on the Peace Poster projects is Tuesday, October 25.

Day 1 - 2

Expectations: You will be completing your contest entries and artist statements this week!

Let's upload your completed contest projects to your Artsonia portfolio. Make sure to complete your title and artist statement.

Go to: artsonia.com/class (or the Class Portal link)

Artsonia School Access Code: MPWB-FZSC

Instructions:

Title Your title to any of your artworks is your choice. It should be relevant to your solution to the project. It can be what I named the project in class but I encourage you to think of a title that is creative, relatable and appropriate.

Artist statement Your artist statement for any of your artworks in Artsonia is an opportunity for you to reveal to viewers your insights -- maybe write about your idea, what media you used (like paint, colored pencils, clay, paper mache, pen & ink, etc.), what were any challenges you may have encountered, what did you think of your final product, would you do anything differently, and did you like the project overall?

Your project grade

I will be grading your final art product and process based on the project objectives, your originality, planning, craftsmanship, use of time in class and your artist statement. Reflecting on your project in your artist statement is such an important part of the design process that I count it 20%. So complementing your artwork with an artist statement in Artsonia is not only a convenient way for me to add credit to your overall score, but it also serves to support your piece in your overall portfolio -- something that you will be able to carry with you on into high school.

Day 3 - 5 Complete your contest entries - these look awesome!

Art Electives Agenda Nov 28 - Dec 2

This week is a full week! Please go to Powerschool and check your grades. Make sure you have your projects uploaded for a grade.

Day 1

intro to Paper Mache!

By popular demand, our 6-4 class is introduced to the Paper Mache Mask project, starting with a history lesson and concept sketches today. We also label our own make form in preparation for Tuesday's build.

Check out our paper mache mask-making process below:

https://youtu.be/j4Zu56M8_Qk

Day 2-4

It takes 3 days to build a uniform and solid structured mask - no cutting corners! If you are absent any of these days, you must build when you return. Some enjoy building a 4th day to make sure the quality is the best. We use only warm water and all-purpose flour, so if you are allergic to gluten on a topical level, please let me know and we can switch to glue-based mix.

Day 5

Priming Day

Art Electives Agenda Dec 5 - Dec 9

With Monday being an early-release day, it's a good time to firm up your mask design and begin drawing it directly on your mask.

Day 1

Continue Paper Mache Masks due by Friday!

Now that we have built our masks, the fun part is designing and painting them.

Paint one color at a time, being careful not to make a mess on this blank canvas!

Day 2-4

For Track 4, take one day at a time, adding one color paint at a time and finally adding extensions in cardboard and embellishments in the end (like feathers, beads, jewels, etc).

Track 2 - Welcome Back! How would you love to create your own Paper Mache Mask?

Check out what this project looks like! You'll be inspired by track 4 masks!

Day 5

Make sure you have captured the best photo of your mask and upload it to your Artsonia portfolio!

Next Project: Intro to Weaving

Day 2 - 5

Make sure your loom looks good, and then take one day at a time, adding one color yarn in rows, pulling and pushing to give you a smooth tapestry.

Plan your idea. Do you want to create stripes or reverse-weave areas? What colors go well together?

Look at other weaving examples.

Know your weaving terms: Loom, warp, weft, tension, pattern, reverse weaving, interlocking.

Day 5

Make sure you have captured the best photo of your weaving and upload it to your Artsonia portfolio!

Review terms!

Complete your review guide with a partner or solo and turn in for check-off:) You may use this sheet as open notes for your End-Of-Course Assessment next week!
