3rd Grade

Welcome to third grade's website. We will be keeping this updated with what is needing to be done and a little about each teacher. Please email us with questions and look at the calendar to help understand what assignments are due daily for students. We have also included some helpful links to websites we will be using throughout the year. Google classroom is always accessed through the student portal.

Third grade learnings:

Quarter 1:

EL: We begin our first module about libraries and how students or people in other countries access books. Our standards of focus include asking and answering questions, finding the main idea with supporting details, using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, discussing topics and being able to respond using complete sentences and details from the story, and finally writing an informational piece about how to overcome reading struggles and creating a strategy bookmark to support them in their reading.

Math: We begin the year discussing equal groups and building the basis of multiplication and division. We then do a quick unit on understanding graphing and answering questions using different graphs. Finally we begin solving addition and subtraction equations with a focus on word problems.

Science: We have two units of science this quarter. The first focuses on the human body specifically the skeletal, muscular, and integumentary (skin) systems and comparing all of them. The other unit is about the different types of matter and comparing them (solid, liquid, and gas) then discussing how to create change in each system.

Social Studies: In social studies, we are learning about local and state governments, the laws that impact different regions of the state, and discuss the impact of leaders and events in history by looking at different sources (primary and secondary).

Quarter 2:

EL: We will learn all about frogs this module. Students will build their reading, research, writing, and collaborative discussion skills through studying their expert frog. Throughout the module, students will consistently reflect on the role of literacy in building and sharing expertise. They will demonstrate their expertise through a Freaky Frog book and trading card to educate others.

Math: We continue with addition and subtraction within 1000. We have learned multiple ways to add and subtract and read word problems to solve their work. We then move on to multiplication and division and finish the quarter with attributes of shapes.

Science: We have three units this quarter. Our first unit deals with matter and its properties including solids, liquids, and gases. Then we move on to exploring force and motion focusing on speed and direction with examining friction. Finally, we begin our earth in the solar system and moon unit which will continue on into 3rd quarter.

Social Studies: In social studies, we learn about economics. This includes supply and demand, entrepreneurship, and how natural resources impact the production and consumption of goods. This year we also will be focusing on inquiry based questions.
