Ways Parents Can Encourage Positive Digital Behavior and Prevent Cyberbullying- As the weather cools and schools close for winter break, your child may spend more time inside. More time inside can mean more time online. Worried about the risks of cyberbullying? There are things you can do to encourage positive digital behavior in kids.
As a parent, you can create trust with your children by starting honest conversations. A discussion with your child is an opportunity to communicate values. Establish expectations about your family’s digital behavior and explain what is appropriate to view or share online. Make sure your child knows which apps can and cannot be used.
Make time to check in with your child about their experiences online. Talk to them about their interactions and address any risks of cyberbullying. Be clear that you are trying to look out for them and that you want to have open dialogue with them. Listen to their concerns and share your point of view.
To minimize the risk of cyberbullying or harm from digital behavior, parents can:
Set clear expectations about how to represent yourself and treat others online
Learn about the harmful effects of cyberbullying and potential legal issues, like hate speech and sexting
Be clear about what content can be viewed or shared
Identify which apps are appropriate for your child’s use and which are not
Limit the amount of time that a child can spend online or on their devices
Model positive, respectful digital behavior on your own devices and accounts

ACADEMICS
Students checked their Powerschool grades in BIB class earlier this week. Your child completed a Digital Grade Check sheet. Ask them to show you their grades and a list of missing assignments. If a student has a missing assignment today, he/she has until the next scheduled grade check to turn in the assignment(s). If the assignment is not completed by the grade check, the teacher will enter a 29.9% in Powerschool to indicate that the assignment is too late to turn in.

The Circle is a facilitated dialogue process that is invitational, meaning that no one is required to participate. It allows participants to share openly, and encourages connections and deepening relationships. This experience is inclusive to all who have an interest in learning ways to better support children and families during these uncertain times through authentic connections.
Staff members are trained to be able to effectively lead these Circles.

ACADEMICS
Friday, January 14th was the last day of 2nd Quarter.
Students should reflect on their academic performance this past quarter/semester, and think about some ways they can improve moving into the last semester of school. Some questions they can ask themselves are:
Did I do my best?
Did I ask for help when I was struggling?
How did I feel when I received a bad grade on my test/assignment/HW?
How does it make me feel when I am unprepared for class?
Does my grades reflect what I know and who I am?
The great thing about starting a new quarter is that students get a fresh start. They can start the quarter off on the right foot by staying on top of their work and using their planners to help them stay organized.
Congratulations to Lauren B. and Ryan T. on being our winners in the drawing. Students who attended the academic celebration had a chance to enter into a drawing for a chromebook carrier.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Second Step is a social-emotional learning program that teaches various social and emotional skills such as emotion recognition and management, empathy, problem solving, bullying prevention, and goal-setting. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
With the new quarter/semester coming up, I will be placing a Second Step Lesson for students in my google classroom by the end of next week. The lesson is called Q3 Reset. The lesson will cover learning from mistakes and failure, identifying roadblocks and overcoming roadblocks. Students are encouraged to view the lesson on their own.
