Essential Outcomes/Standards

Classical Language programs involve the study of Latin and Ancient Greek, languages that are no longer a native or first language for any population.
However, both languages are accessible to 21st Century students through literature and have a significant impact on learning in other disciplines, such as modern languages, art, law, government, medicine, and so on.
The primary focus in Classical Language learning is the development of Interpretive Reading skills. Interpretive Listening, as well as Presentational Speaking and Writing, are ancillary skills that support language learning. These modalities are of particular value for students with different learning styles and of various ages.

Second: PowerSchool. Here, parents can see their student's grade.

NON-NEGOTIABLES for STUDENTS

A decision about “why” you have chosen not to abide by one of the non-negotiables is not an option. Students are expected to comply with all rules and regulations set forth by WCPSS and Wakefield High School. Failure to comply with these 5 expectations may result in OSS.

CLASS OR PASS - If you are in the halls, you must have a pass and it must be presented when requested by an adult.
STAY OR PAY - If students are out of place and are approached by any adult, they must remain in the presence of that individual until the issue is resolved.
COMPLY OR GOODBYE - Students are expected to follow the rules while on campus. Failure to comply with reasonable requests may result in OSS.
ON TIME OR SERVE TIME - Students are expected to get to class on time. Failure to comply will result in ASD, Saturday Detention, and OSS.
TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES - Students are expected to display the highest level of integrity. Cheating, lying, stealing, & falsification will not be tolerated.

Why Study Latin ?

Classical language teachers throughout North Carolina have identified the purposes for Latin study as follows:

-- To develop the ability to read and understand a written passage.

-- To show the relevance of Latin and the Greco-Roman culture through its influence on modern languages, literatures, and cultures.

-- To understand language in general and especially the student's first or native language.

-- To understand and appreciate culture in general and especially the students' own culture(s).

--To foster vocabulary expansion.

-- To become lifelong learners.

The benefits of Latin study have long been documented. Students develop skills and strategies for learning new vocabulary, analyzing new sentence structures and comprehending written sentences. Latin study also helps cultivate such mental processes as alertness, attention to detail, memory, logic and critical reasoning.
