Standard 3: Teachers Know the Content they Teach
Standard 3: Teachers Know the Content they Teach
Standard 3a. Align instruction to NCSCoS
I demonstrate various instructional strategies in my classroom and share them with colleagues. By showcasing how these strategies can be effectively implemented, I provide a clear example for them to follow and adapt to their teaching styles.
I work closely with BTs and my teammates during planning sessions to integrate new instructional strategies into our lesson plans. I also offer support, helping them tailor these strategies to meet the diverse needs of their students. With my team, I unpack the standards and create enrichment and remediation activities based on the criteria.
I share many resources, such as research articles, instructional materials, and technology tools, that support effective teaching practices with mentors, BTs, and my team. I am committed to ongoing support, answering questions, and providing feedback as colleagues implement these strategies in their classrooms.
Standard 3b. Know the content appropriate to their teaching specialty
I design and implement projects integrating math, science, and social studies, encouraging students to explore connections between subjects. These projects allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, fostering a deeper understanding and curiosity about how different disciplines intersect. For example, students completed a literacy project mapping the events of the American Revolution using Google Voyager and presented at NCTIES. In Social Studies, students used literacy skills to create a travel brochure. In math, students used map skills and writing to plan a trip across the state.
I worked with my team to organize 4th grade field trips to the legislative building, NC Museum of History, and science museum. These experiences expose students to practical applications of classroom content and inspire them to explore subjects beyond the standard curriculum.
I support students in pursuing their own interests by guiding them in independent research projects. At the NCTIES student showcase, I challenged my students to observe the other student showcases and find an activity we could bring back to our classroom. They were all enthusiastic about "Genius Hour". In our classroom, we call this "You Be the Teacher". I provide resources, mentorship, and opportunities for them to present their findings, nurturing their passion for learning and discovery beyond the required coursework.
Standard 3c. Recognize the interconnectedness of content areas/disciplines
I collaborate with specialists to create interdisciplinary units that establish links between disciplines. By working together, we design cohesive and integrated lessons that enhance students' understanding and show the interconnectedness of various subjects, influencing school-wide curriculum and teaching practices. This year, I worked with our STEM teacher, the Media Specialist, and the Art Specialist on 3 different multi-media projects that we showcased at NCTIES.
I integrate global perspectives into my lessons by including examples, case studies, and materials from different cultures and countries. This helps students understand the world's interconnectedness and appreciate diverse viewpoints.
I involve my students in projects and discussions about global issues such as climate change and human rights. By encouraging them to research, present, and debate these topics, I spark their curiosity and deepen their understanding of global challenges and their relevance to our lives.
