Cells: basic building block of all living things
Multicellular Organism: an organism many of many specialized cells; specialized cells work together to help the organism survive
Cells are the smallest unit of living things. They group together to form tissues. Tissues form organs. Organs work together to create systems. All your body systems work together to help you survive.
Genes: part of DNA that is passed from parent to offspring; determines your inherited traits
Trait: a physical characteristic of an organism; ex: eye color, fur color, height, ear shape
Inherited Trait: a characteristic that is passed down from parents to offspring through DNA
Acquired Trait: a characteristic that is learned or developed through experiences
Instinct: a behavior that is hardwired in an animal and does not have to be learned
Learned Behavior: a behavior that is learned through experience
Animals and humans are born with certain behaviors. These are called instincts.
Examples:
nest building and spider web making
living in groups
crying
pulling your hand away from something hot
Other behaviors are learned through experiences. These are called learned behaviors.
Examples:
building a better nest
doing pet tricks
speaking a language
riding a bike
Animals and humans have characteristics that are passed down from their parents. These are called inherited traits.
Examples:
hair color
eye color
height
earlobe shape
Some characteristics are developed from experiences. These are called acquired traits.
Examples:
hair length
piercing
