When solving addition and subtraction word problems, it is helpful to think about what type of situation is happening. See the different types of story problems your student will be working with in this 2nd grade unit!
Example:
Braylyn had 56 dollars. His dad gave him 26 more dollars. How many dollars does Braylyn have now?
Example:
Viktoriia has 32 yellow flowers and 29 red flowers. How many flowers does Viktoriia have in all?
Example:
Jordan had 46 stickers. She gave 18 stickers to Cali. How many stickers does Jordan have now?
Example:
Forster has 76 pencils. Elias has 54 pencils. How many more pencils does Forster have than Elias?

It's also very important for students to understand the idea of subtraction as being the difference between two numbers. This helps them conceptualize comparison problems, and it also helps them understand the relationship between addition and subtraction.
