Dear Second Grade Families,

In Spanish this week we will conclude our study of the five senses.  We have learned describing words to talk about how we perceive things through sight, taste, touch, hearing, and smelling.

During recent Culture Fridays we have learned how Perú celebrates carnival with a tree of gifts and have studied the diverse fruits of Perú.

Beginning on February 26th, we will begin the planner, "How the World Works".   Initially our focus will be on general weather, and then we will shift to weather disasters such as tornadoes and other storms.

The week of March 18 will be a week of Cultural Arts projects.  Second graders will be creating a llama, an important animal in the Peruvian culture, which we have been studying all year.

Thank you for your support!

Dear Second Grade Families,

We are wrapping up 2023 in style in second grade Spanish!

This week will conclude our study describing families.

Next week students will be taking a reading, listening, writing, and Peruvian culture test.  They have been working hard at their learning, and they are ready!

December 11th-15th we will enjoy a cultural arts project, as we begin some paper weaving, imitating the Peruvian style of weaving.

Our final days in Spanish in 2023 will be dedicated to some hands- on learning about  special Peruvian traditions.

Thank you for your support,

The Spanish Team

Spanish Updates!

Thank you, Joyner Families, for your support of our October 11th Spanish Dance performance.  We are very proud of the hard work of all of the children!

This week after Spanish dancing concludes, we will begin exploring the planner, “Where We Are in Place and Time".  Students will build on prior knowledge about homes and will learn to communicate about what families do at home.  They will also learn to physically describe people.

We will study Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a traditional celebration observed on November 1st and 2nd in many Spanish-speaking countries.  This tradition seeks to remember loved ones who have passed away.  Families gather to share memories and favorite foods of these family members.

Of special note:  If interested, your child is invited to bring in a photo of a loved one who has passed away.  (It could be a photo of a pet as well.)  We will display these pictures in the front of the school with our Day of the Dead symbols.  If you would like us to return the picture to you, please make sure it is clearly labeled with your child’s name and grade.

On October 31st, we will offer students an opportunity to sample pan de muerto, dead bread.  This is a Mexican holiday tradition, and we are ordering this special treat from a local bakery.  In order for your student to be able to eat the bread, we will need a signed permission slip with any pertinent allergy information.  We are still missing this form from many students.  If we have not received this paper from your child, we will send home an additional copy this week. We will provide an allergy-free alternative for students unable to eat the bread.

Fridays are days of special focus on culture.  This year second graders are learning about Perú.  We have begun to explore continents and the basic geography of Perú, including Perú's neighbors (surrounding countries).  In the weeks ahead we will learn about the Peruvian product of potatoes.

At the conclusion of this planner, prior to Thanksgiving Break, students will have a series of assessments evaluating their writing, reading, presentational skills, interpersonal communication, and cultural knowledge.  No special preparation is needed apart from daily participation in class.

September 11, 2023

Dear Second Grade Families,

Greetings from the Spanish Team!  Throughout the year, as we change IB planners, we will send a brief update about your child’s learning in Spanish.  Beginning the first full week of September, we dove into our first planner, “Who We Are.” We are learning to talk, read, write, and present about homes in Spanish.

Last week a note went home with important information about the Spanish Department along with a sheet for you to complete and return.  Please be sure to have your child return it as soon as possible.

Please mark your calendars!  On Wednesday, October 11th, your child is invited to participate in our Fall Cultural Dance performance.  Watch your child’s backpack for more details and the permission slip.

Thanks for your support,

The Joyner Spanish Team
