Biography

Janice Withers was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated from Athens Drive Senior High School, and discovered her talent and love for Visual Arts. Withers graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Design. In addition, Withers has a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Howard University with a concentration in Studio Painting; and a Master’s Degree in Art Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During her years of undergraduate and graduate studies, Withers studied a multitude of diverse media including drawing, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and graphic design. 

As a Visual Arts Teacher, Mrs. Withers guides students in forming a foundation of learning about Visual Arts. Students' own art making becomes infused with a variety of images, techniques, and approaches. Students are aware of popular culture and may want to incorporate elements from this culture into their art. Students learn to accept that others’ preferences may differ from their own but begin to appreciate multiple artistic solutions and interpretations. Study of historical and cultural context gives students insight into the role of visual arts as a record of human achievement.
