*Kindergarten artists will create original art that expresses ideas about themselves and understand that artists sometimes collaborate and share ideas. They will learn about the artist Wassily Kandinsky. They will be able to understand how artists view or interpret art differently. The Kinders will read Where the Wild Things Are and create an illustration using their imagination. They will also understand the characteristics of the Elements of Art, focusing on lines, shapes, color, and texture. They will learn how to mix colors and create shapes when create a pumpkin patch.
*1st grade artists will create original art that expresses ideas, themes, and events. They will be able to recognize that art can be used as a form of communication. We will explore the murals of artist Chris Uphues and create Emoji shapes based on our feelings and emotions. The 1st graders will study the artist Claude Monet and create their own Impressionist painting of the Waterlilie using the outdoors as their source of inspiration. We will explore the art of Joan Miro and we will create Line Monsters using their imagination. They will be able to explain how their artwork was created. The 1st graders will be able to classify art into categories.
*2nd grade artists will create art from both real and imaginary sources of inspiration. They will also learn about Wayne Thiebaud and create their own favorite yummy sweet treats.will learn how to create original art that expresses ideas about people, neighborhoods, or communities. They will understand the “story” in works of art. They will study the artists Frida Kahlo and Faith Ringgold. We will read Tar Beach and students will create their own cityscape story quilt.
*3rd grade artists will use art vocabulary when discussing the work of artist Frida Kahlo and will create a self-portrait which incorporates symbols that reflect ideas about themselves. They will also study the artist Alma Woodsey Thomas and create their own abstract expressionist painting. They will understand how a single tool can be manipulated in multiple ways to create a work of art. The 3rd graders will be able to identify themes used and be able to create art that expresses their own ideas. Students will be able to understand characteristics of the Principles of Design.
*4th grade artists will view artists’ works and understand the message of the artist. They will be able to explain how place and time can influence ideas, issues, and themes found in art. The 4th graders will be able to use ideas and imagery from NC artists as sources for creating art. They will study the North Carolina artists Minnie Evans and Romare Bearden and they will create their own symmetrical abstract and/or non-objective art that expresses their ideas. They will also create an "All About Me" collage.
*5th grade artists will learn about the artist Kehinde Wiley and create their own self-portrait. They will also learn about the mural artist Kevin Bongang. They will design their own Positivity Mural that reflects their own personal voice/choice. They will be able to create their own realistic, imaginative, abstract, and non-objective art using their choice of media. They will be able to apply the Principles of Design when creating their composition. The 5th graders will use ideas and imagery from the global environment as sources for creating their artwork.
