You will learn how to access the school's wireless network during the parent information night. We will have a dedicated server for BYOD use. Students should use the "wcpssguest" wifi network. Your teacher can provide instruction on logging onto the school’s wireless network.
The wireless network provided by WCPSS has security and filters that make Internet access safer and more directed for learning. Students are required to use the school-based wifi if they choose to access their devices on campus.
It is not the responsibility of the classroom teacher to "fix" your device. Most tablets/systems/smartphones will ask you if you want to join a detected wireless connection and then you can join the county provided network. If your device doesn't come up this way try clicking on the network icon/program and search for an available wireless network.
Students with signed BYOD agreements will be permitted to use their devices in designated classrooms based on teacher direction and discretion for instructional purposes. Device use is prohibited in the hallways, cafeteria, gym or in non BYOD classrooms.
Most tools will be web based and should not cost anything. Teachers may request that students install apps, but will never require an app be installed. The only standard for devices is that they must have a web broswer for World Wide Web access. Any apps teachers request students install will be free apps, never paid apps. Students will need to use their own (or parent, with permission) accounts to install apps on the device.
BYOD is not a requirement at Harris Creek Elementary School. Students will be provided needed access to computers, networks, or the Internet when learning requirements demand. While BYOD simplifies and potentially enhances learning you will not be penalized for not bringing a device.
Students are prohibited from using any student-owned device other than their own. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action by the administration.
Any device that can access the internet. Examples include laptops, tablets, smartphones, and Kindles.
HCES is not responsible for providing facilities to charge devices; devices are expected to be charged at home and put away after the battery loses its charge.
WCPSS Student Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) School Board Policy 6446: This policy governs the use of WCPSS electronic information resources and defines students' proper conduct and responsibilities while using WCPSS electronic information resources. The entire AUP Policy can be located on page 17-19 in WCPSS Student Parent Handbook. or click here: http://webarchive.wcpss.net/policy-files/series/policies/6446-bp.html
BYOD is a privilege. Administrative discipline may be required for students not following proper BYOD classroom procedures.
BYOD is a privilege and not a requirement therefore you are bringing your device to school at your own risk. Harris Creek Elementary School and/or WCPSS is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen devices. By allowing a student to bring a device to school, the parent and student assume liability for any damages or theft. School administration will investigate the issue and follow student conduct policy if needed. Students take full responsibility for their devices. Personal technology should not be left on campus before or after school hours and should never be left unattended. Staff members are not permitted to touch student-owned devices, except to confiscate them due to disciplinary reasons. We suggest keeping devices safe using some sort of case/protector, marking the device with the student's name, and keeping it in a safe place when not in use.
Students are responsible for troubleshooting their own devices. No staff member is permitted to provide technical support for student-owned devices.
