Head Coach David Green
David Green will be starting his 49th year of coaching scholastic football and his fifth as the Head Coach at Green Hope. In his first season at Green Hope, he led the Falcons to the third round of the state playoffs. Prior to coming to Green Hope, he was the Head Football Coach at Enloe High School and Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, Williams High School in Burlington, and McBee High School in South Carolina.
Coach Green has been known for building strong staffs, developing future head coaches and turning around programs. Of the 6 stops in his coaching career, he has turned 5 of the teams around within his first two years, having undefeated seasons or deep playoff runs. Ten of his former assistants have become head coaches, and a large number of his former players have become football coaches, including several head coaches.
During his six seasons at Leesville, he turned around a perennial loser and made the Pride one of the best teams in the Triangle, winning over 50 games over the last five seasons. Leesville won two conference championships—the first in the school’s history—and advanced to the Eastern Finals in 2007.
His teams have been known for their explosive spread option offense and physical, aggressive defenses. While at Leesville Road, Coach Green was named Cap-7 Conference Coach of the Year and Area Coach of the Year. At Williams, he was named Times News Region Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the Bulldogs to the third round of the playoffs, bringing the team back to prominence after several losing seasons prior to his arrival.
A number of Coach Green’s former players have advanced to the next level, with players moving on to schools that include NC State, UNC, Duke, East Carolina, Minnesota, Miami, South Carolina, Clemson, Tennessee, Appalachian State, Elon, Richmond, Wingate and UNC-Charlotte among others. Among his former pupils is College Hall of Fame Player Terry Kinard, who excelled at Clemson and in the NFL and Braxton Berrios of Miami and the New York Jets.
Prior to his time at Leesville Road, Coach Green was an assistant coach at Apex High School in Apex, NC. During his time there, the Cougars won their first ever conference championship. Before moving to NC, he spent 27 years coaching in South Carolina. His 1990 team was undefeated in the regular season and ranked number one sin the state.
While in SC, he served as conference president and a member of the South Carolina High School League Legislative Assembly for several years. He won Conference Coach of the Year awards in football, track and golf and was an assistant coach on a State Champion runner-up in football and a State Championship team in basketball.
He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he majored in Secondary Education, and is a National Board Certified history teacher.
He is married to Laurie Calder-Green, a retired basketball and volleyball coach. Mrs. Calder-Green won numerous state championships in both sports while coaching in South Carolina.
