WHO CAN APPLY:
ALL Rising 9th Graders are eligible and encouraged to apply. In order to be eligible to apply to the Public Safety Academy, students must be assigned to Garner Magnet HS as their base school. The Academy has an open and equitable student recruitment process that results in a student body that reflects the demographics of the school community. A lottery is used to determine acceptance into the Academy. The academy is designed as a four-year high school program. Students are expected to commit to the program for the duration of their high school experience. The academy requires specific courses as well as an internship before high school graduation. The internship is 120 hours
Students must be 16 or turning 16 during the fall semester. Upon completion of Firefighter Tech I, II, III and passing all 20 state certification exams, students will be a certified Firefighter with the State of NC.
Seniors. Students applying for EMT should be 18 years of age, or turning 18, prior to sitting for the State EMT Exam. Upon completion of EMT I and II students will be eligible to sit for the Emergency Medical Services State Exam. Upon passing the exam, students are eligible to be hired as an EMT or go straight to Paramedic School.
