Welcome to FVMS Bengal Band!
My name is Cole Merricks and I am the Band Director at FVMS. Back in the 6th Grade, I joined Band and was introduced to one of the most amazing experiences any one can be a part of in school. Since then, I have made many friends, learned from some of the best musicians in the world, and been able to teach and share my experiences with my students - All because of Band.
In the band program, I strive for each student to be the best they can be and hope to instill a lifelong love of music. Band teaches us two of life’s most valuable lessons: commitment and team work. Through the use of music performance I hope all my students can further their understanding of these two lessons. Parents, I encourage you to reach out with any questions; for a lot of 6th Grade Parents, Band is brand new and I know that means many questions, so do not hesitate to reach out!

Important Details for 6th Grade Band
Band is an elective class at FVMS that meets everyday for the entire year. Since it takes so much time for students to gain knowledge on their instrument, the full year is needed for a true band experience. Band meets only during the school day with the exception of two concert dates in which students will need to perform outside of school hours.

Students will need to decide on an instrument, if they already know, great! I will help with this process in the first week of school with my goal of having instruments decided by August 31st. Options for 6th Graders are Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone. Just like a football team, not everyone gets to play quarterback, so my advice to students who wish to pursue Saxophone or Percussion is to have another instrument in mind in case their first option doesn’t work for the needs of our group.
Once an instrument is decided, the next step is for parents to secure an instrument. My preference for Beginning Band Students is to rent their first instrument. I prefer this for two reasons: 1) You are guaranteed a high quality beginner instrument and 2) The company provides insurance. Students have more success early on with a high quality instrument and will SOUND better with ease. The insurance provided works easy for parents, with no extra cost for damage. Our Local Music store, Music and Arts is hosting a rental meeting specifically for FVMS on Zoom.
6th Grade Band Instrument Rental Meeting: August 31st, 2023.
Other Supplies needed for Class:
1 inch 3-ring Binder with pockets (optional clear sheets)
Pencil
Essential Elements Book 1 (will be included with rental package if renting)
Folding Stand (wire or any material) for at home-practice. Option to purchase at rental meeting.
I am looking forward to an amazing year with our 6th Grade band! Parents, once again please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
