6th Grade Course Description

The course description below is for the 6th grade students.

On student schedules the course title is: Exploring Apparel and Interior Design (1st/3rd 9 weeks periods) and on student schedules for the (2nd/4th 9 weeks periods) Understanding Personal Finance and Hospitality.

This course is an over view of all modules taught in FACS at the middle school level. This is an excellent way to explore the different facets of this curriculum and see where interests are so that students can choose which modules they would like to continue with in a new semester.

The first 9 weeks and the third 9 weeks students will learn basic Interior Design and Apparel. They will also learn about interpersonal relationships. In interior design, students learn the basic principles of design and how to arrange and manage a living space. They will learn about color schemes and home furnishings. For apparel students will learn the different factors that influence clothing choice and trends in the fashion industry. We will also learn about basic clothing pieces that make up a wardrobe and how to care for our clothing. Students will also learn to hand sew. For interpersonal relationships students will understand the unique characteristics of self, they will learn about different types of families and what is considered a family unit.

The second 9 weeks and fourth 9 weeks I teach Personal Finance and Resource Management and Food Service and Hospitality. In personal finance and resource management, students will learn about the importance of setting up a budget as well as wants verses needs and impulse buying as opposed to different ways of saving money. They will also learn what resources are available and how to gain access to those resources. In food service and hospitality, students will learn the basics of food safety and sanitation when cooking. We will learn how to use the basic kitchen equipment and tools. In the module on nutrition and wellness students will understand the factors that influence nutrition and wellness, and the impact that those choices have on our overall wellness. Students will participate in 3 kitchen labs and learn nutritious meal planning and preparation.
