Recommended classes before taking AP Chemistry
Before taking AP Chemistry, it is required that you take the regular or honors section of chemistry. The information learned in chemistry will be explored deeper in AP and the foundational knowledge is necessary.
It is recommended that Math 3 be taken during AP Chemistry or was already completed.
AP Chemistry is a separate credit at EWHS and is highly recommended for students that want to pursue a degree or career in science or math.
Medical field
Engineering
General Sciences (chemistry, biology, geology, environmental science)
General Math
A lot of the topics are the same between the two courses. I treat honors and regular chemistry the same in terms of preparing students to take AP Chemistry. Every student that has taken honors or regular chemistry has the ability to take AP Chemistry.
When you get to AP Chemistry, you will notice that there is more opportunity to ask questions about why things happen. During many of the AP Chemistry labs, you will come up with a question surrounding the topic and you are tasked with answering that question with the tools and guidance that I give you!
AP Chemistry is data driven. There are a lot of numbers involved. The only reason there are so many numbers in chemistry is because numbers are reliable...they can be replicated...we can test and retest and aim to get the same numbers. You will see a lot of math in AP Chemistry...but at the same time, you are given an entire sheet of formulas that I will teach you how to use.
Here are two assignments we work on during the first few days of the semester. These assignments are designed to refresh your memory of regular/honors chemistry and relearn any topics that were forgotten.
A few of the lab experiments that we do:
Formula of a Hydrate
Lava Lamps
Synthesis of Alum Crystals
Iodine Clock Reaction
Hand Warmer Experiment
Titration Redox Lab
AP Chemistry at EWHS uses the CollegeBoard website to prepare for the AP exam. This tool is designed to expose students to the format, wording, and general topics that they will be tested on. Access to CollegeBoard is crucial in this class.
