Students at The Exploris School (Middle School) and Moore Square Magnet Middle School have been finding shark teeth from different sediments, including sediment from Aurora NC. They are measuring the teeth and making graphs to then analyze the data. This project helps Dr. Terry "Bucky" Gates at NCSU collect data to find more information about shark populations during the Miocene and Pliocene on the East Coast of United States.
This school year a group of 6th graders completed their service learning project on Citizen Science- Shark Teeth Forensics.
Students found shark teeth from the Aurora, NC sediment (Pungo River and Yorktown formations). Above we have the frequency graph created from the data collected on shark teeth sizes.
The Exploris Fossil Club will be presenting their findings to Dr. Terry "Bucky" Gates on May 30, 2018 at the NCMNS-Nature Research Center "Daily Planet Theater", from 3:30-4:30 pm.
