English as a Second Language

If you need your Wake County email USERNAME and PASSWORD to access your school email, let me know. You need this to access your other teachers' assignments - cdukes@wcpss.net

Welcome! Here's a bit of info about me. I earned a BS degree in education at Southern Connecticut State University, ESL certification from NCDPI, as well as my National Board certification in English as a New Language.

I've been teaching ESL at Broughton High School since 2000. I previously taught at American international schools in Barranquilla, Colombia and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Before coming to BHS, I taught at Underwood Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina.

While at Broughton, I was fortunate enough to spend 5 weeks in Mexico and 5 weeks in China on U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays grants. These experiences enriched my understanding of BHS's diverse English Language Learners (ELLs), as well as the process of second language acquisition.

I currently teach ESL levels 1 and 2, and serve as the faculty advisor for the Teen Democrats Club, and BHS's SAGA (formerly GSA).

This year, I am serving as the interim department chair for the World Languages Department.

Students! Please remember to bring your ESL 3-ring binder (with paper) and a pencil to class each day. I have some used binders in my classroom, if you need one.

All cell phones will be collected at the start of each class so you can focus on instruction. Your phone will be returned to you five minutes before the bell, so you can check social media, as well as your email, before going to your next class.

I look forward to working with you this year, as you learn English and become part of the Broughton community!
