Each event is listed below along with the rules and procedures that will be used at the Firsti n Fitness Event.
The shuttle run tests speed and agility. The students are standing 30 feet from the blocks. The best place to do the shuttle run is on a basketball court with the students running from sideline to sideline. On the signal, the student will run as fast as they can from the start line to the opposite line to pick up the first block. They will turn and return to the start line and PLACE the block on the poly spot. MAKE SURE THE BLOCK IS PLACED ON THE DOT, and not dropped or thrown down. The student then turns around to retrieve the second block the same as they did the first block. They will then run through the start/finish line with the second block in hand. The time will start when the signal is given and then stopped when the student crosses the start/finish line.
Students are instructed on where to sit in corral. The competition procedures and rules are explained to students. The 100-yard dash is run in heats (6 students in each heat) beginning with the 5th grade with 4th, 3rd, and 2nd following. Students only compete (run) one time. An individual PEPI student times each student running. The PEPI student escorts the runner over to the scorekeeper to record time. Students return to corral site and wait there until the ribbon ceremony.
Stay on your "X" (spot), on the command- jump as many times as you can for 1 minute, when time is up, stay on your spot until we get your score from your counters.
The PEPI students can assist the students to grab the bars. The students can use either hand grip (palms facing away or palms facing towards the student). A student cannot mix handgrips. The teacher will indicate when the student can begin.
The student starts in the down position and pulls himself up so that his chin is higher than the bar. The student will lower himself so that the arms are fully extended. At no time can a student rest at the top of the bar (e.g., places his chin on the bar) or swing his body forward. A student can “bounce” in a rhythmic manner as long as his arms are fully extended.
* Swinging with the legs or hips or pumping of the knees will not be counted*
*Students must go straight up, chin over bar, and straight down for pull-up to count*
The boys and girls run the mile at the same time from opposite sides of the track starting with the 2nd grade; the grades are split into two heats. One PEPI student coaches and counts laps for one runner. When the runner approaches the finish on the 4th lap, the PEPI student asks for a time and records it on the card.
Each student will be allowed three jumps. Beginning with toes behind the starting line, student performs a standing jump, taking off with both feet and landing on both feet. Each jump will be measured from the point of body contact closest to the starting line. The jump will be considered a “scratch” if any part of the student’s shoes touches the starting line. A scratch will count as one of the three jumps. Jumps will be measured to the nearest inch, rounding up. The best of the three jumps will be the official score.
Sportsmanship and courtesy for other competitors are to be given as general background for Tri-athletes. Each student is reminded that they are representing their school with the best scores in the three events. An explanation of the order of the events is given
First, the tri-athletes will walk with the PEPI students and teachers to the area they will run the shuttle run. Following the shuttle run, they will go and do their pull-ups. The final event is the Boy and Girls Mile Run. At the end the scores are calculated and first through fifth places are determined. All students’ names are to be called starting with participants and finishing with first place. A check to make sure all students will receive a ribbon should be made prior to announcing the place ribbons.
