Individual Counseling

Individual counseling may occur during a single session, or a few consecutive sessions. Because of the nature of being in a school setting, school counselors meet with students individually 3-6 times. Sessions usually last about 15-30 minutes. If a child continues to have difficulties, appropriate community resources for long-term counseling can be provided.

Here are examples of topics covered in individual counseling:

  • Grief/Loss

  • Adjustments/Transitions

  • Behavior

  • Decision-making

  • Friendships

  • Academics

  • Family Changes

Small Group Counseling

Small group counseling provides an environment where students can learn new skills and explore topics with their peers. Groups may be based on schoolwide data, parent referral, teacher referral and/or self referral from children. Groups are typically 30 minutes and last 4- 6 weeks. S tudents work in groups of 3-6 on a particular topic or skill during small group counseling.

We have a variety of small groups available. Groups allow children to develop coping skills, a sense of belonging and to realize that they are not alone in their concerns. Groups include:

  • School Success

  • Coping Skills

  • Self-Esteem

  • Social Skills /Friendship

  • Anxiety

  • Building Resilience

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Diversity Appreciation

Confidentiality

Please understand confidentiality is an inherent part of the counseling relationship and vital to a trusting partnership. We encourage students to share with parents and will always contact parents/guardians if we are concerned about a student’s safety. A student and family’s privacy is very important. All information shared with a school counselor will remain confidential unless…

(1) a student shares a plan to harm him/herself or someone else

(2) there is suspicion a student may be a victim of abuse or neglect.

In these situations, school counselors are required by law to report this information to parents AND/OR to appropriate agencies.

Counselors may share information with teachers/staff on a need to know basis with student or parent permission.
