Symphonic Orchestra is the fundamental group of classical string musicians at South Garner High School. These students study and perform on classical string instruments, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Piano is also used when there are students available to perform.
Levels of Symphonic Orchestra-
Intermediate Orchestra- These students are generally 9th graders who have completed 2 or 3 years of middle school orchestra or have taken private lessons through another area program. They are responsible for music played, scales, and other musical activities the orchestra does. Students may repeat this class for credit and they do not have to move up to an honors level class. Grading rubrics have been developed and are used for their skill level.
Proficient Orchestra- This is an honors level class and receives a .5 boost on the GPA scale. If a student earns an A in proficient orchestra class they receive a 4.5 instead of a 4 toward their GPA. Students must audition and/or show demonstrated mastery of intermediate levels to be placed in the Proficient level group. Any student 9-12 may tryout for this grouping. Students in this group are required to audition for the senior region group during the spring. They will also be responsible for higher levels of music and levels of leadership in the orchestra itself. Grading rubrics have been developed and are used for their skill level.
Advanced Orchestra- This is an honors level class and receives a .5 boost on the GPA scale. If a student earns an A in Advance orchestra class they receive a 4.5 instead of a 4 toward their GPA. Students must audition and/or show demonstrated mastery of proficient levels to be placed in the Advanced level group. Any student 10-12 may tryout for this grouping. Students in this group are required to audition for the senior region group during the spring. They will also be responsible for higher levels of music and levels of leadership in the orchestra itself. Grading rubrics have been developed and are used for their skill level.

Activities for the Orchestra include: two concerts in the fall/winter. Senior region orchestra auditions, Musical Performance Adjudication, and at least one other concert in the spring. Many of these students also participate in area string ensembles. As we progress musically, you will begin to see these students throughout Garner and the region doing small ensemble activities to show our community how much we value our performing and their commitment to the arts.
