Unit 4: Develop Multiplication Strategies
Vocabulary
Multiplication: repeated addition
Factor: Numbers we can multiply together to get another number.
Product: The answer when two or more values are multiplied together.
Multiplier: The number that you are multiplying by, but because we can multiply the two numbers in any order, it is better to use the word "factor".
Array: items (such as objects, numbers, etc.) arranged in rows and/or columns.
Area Model: a rectangular diagram or model used for multiplication , in which the length and width of the rectangle are defined by the factors.
Area: The size of a surface.
Expanded Notation: Writing a number to show the value of each digit. It is shown as a sum of each digit multiplied by its matching place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.)
Partial Products: Any of the multiplication results we get leading up to an overall multiplication result. Example: below we see the partial products of 215 × 9 are 1800, 90 and 45:
(200+10+5) x 9
200x9= 1800 10x9=90 5x9= 45
Algebraic Notation: Using the distributive property to multiply; a shorthand way to show expanded notation.
