The North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests are designed to measure student performance on the goals, objectives, and grade-level competencies specified in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The 2012 law enacted by the NC General Assembly requires that all public school students in North Carolina must be reading on grade level by the end of the third grade. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple-choice K-12 assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. The CogAT is a group-administered aptitude test, given in the fall. It is given to all 3rd graders in the state and is used as the first step of many into qualifying for the county's AIG programs.
The ITBS test, also known as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills is a nationally administered set of exams designed to assess the abilities of students. In third grades subjects tested include Reading and Math. Only certain students will take this exam, based off their performance on the CogAT. This is the second step of many into qualifying for the county's AIG programs.
We have other state-wide assessments given during 3 benchmark windows throughout the year; Beginning of Year, Middle of Year, and End of Year, as well. For more information, click on the name of the assessment.
