Teachers worked through Professional development centered around the World Health Organization (WHO) 2021 goals. After researching and learning about the global view of these goals, they worked to connect them to students at a local level through a variety of PBL's.
Summary of Completed Projects:
1. The Outbreak Exhibit from the Smithsonian will be on display. Graphics students from the spring semester last year developed 6 new panels for this exhibit that will be on display. The exhibit will travel after this to a variety of surrounding colleges. The student developed panels are now part of the exhibit that the Smithsonian has available to download. (There is a link on the flyer to this exhibit if you are looking for more context).
2. Food Distribution Concept: Foods and Graphics classes developed emergency meal boxes. Graphics students worked to brand this concept (there are 4 different concepts developed), while foods classes worked to develop recipes and create the meals offered. They ran a food drive and collected specific items for the boxes. (Think about the idea of Fresh or a meal delivery service BUT with a long shelf life for emergencies or food distribution needs, etc). They’ll have boxes on display and then the actual meal boxes (20ish) will be donated to families in need.
3. Health Fair Results: As mentioned above, these students will have results and findings, images, etc. from their event and explain the impact of their choices. They’ll also formally present in the auditorium but they’ll have information and students in the gym exhibit space as well.
4. Mental Health and Spaces: Interior Design, Carpentry, and Architecture classes worked together to learn more about mental health and the impact color, space and other design elements have on wellness. They’ll have a variety of models developed that represent different types of spaces and how we should consider mental health in every day areas.
5. Innovations in Medicine: Entrepreneurship 1 & 2 worked together to develop products/businesses that address a goal of their choices. Some teams were also supported by Python students. They’ll have their sales pitches on display and a few will pitch their ideas to the panel in the auditorium.
6. Use Case Diagrams for AI: Python students worked to research topics of AI and learn about ethical dilemmas and challenges faced in the development process of AI in healthcare. They collaborated to identify “front-end” weaknesses. They developed solutions through Use Cases and Unified Modeling Language diagrams commonly used to direct programs
7. Urban Growing: Sustainable Ag 1 & 2 students worked to prove that gardening can be done using recycled materials that everyone has access to. They’ll have their model growing systems on display as well as information sheets that walk users through creating their own system.
-Ag Ed: Early Childhood students used this information as well as nutritional information from Foods classes to develop preschool curriculum around growing, sustainable living, food choices, etc. They will use the childcare centers in which they intern to present their developed activities and will have their work on display at the exhibition.
8. Plant or Meat?: Animal Science students debated the ethical, health, social, and economical impacts of meat and plant-based diets. Their research ended in a debate as to which was the better choice. Their findings (from both arguments) will be on display during the event.
