HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

We are all excited to be in a new year. Welcome 2021!

A couple of reminders:

  1. Monday Jan. 4th through Friday Jan. 15th all Wake County Schools will be 100% remote. Students are expected to attend classes at their scheduled times of 9:10am, 10:00am, 1:00pm, and 2:15pm. They will access their meets through their Google Classroom. The link for the meet will be posted at the very top of the page in the banner. Please remind them of this as we near the end of winter break. All students should be familiar with this protocol as this is the same way they all accessed meetings at the beginning of the school year. Students in Virtual Academy already access their meets in this way so there are no changes for them.

  2. As we head into the second semester, we hope students will begin to take a little more ownership of their role in their education. If your family makes New Year's resolutions, this might be a good time to discuss ways your child can take the lead in their educational responsibilities. Some strategies students can use to keep up with their assignments, class schedule, hold themselves accountable, and ask for help are to utilize the Daily To-Do list, set timers for 5 minutes before class starts, check their Google Classroom for any "Missing" Assignments, when a student is absent he/she can email us to see what was missed, keep their cameras on, schedule office hours or email us when help is needed.

  3. Students will be completing the NC CheckIn 1 for Science this upcoming week (January 11-15). The main purpose of this resource is to provide parents, guardians, teachers, and students with an indication of your student’s current understanding of the content standards and to provide appropriate grade level support. Please administer this assessment to your child using the resources Ms. McGann sent home regarding the CheckIn task. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Ms. McGann at emcgann@wcpss.net.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ask.

Happy Holidays!

We are happy to make accommodations!

Friday 10/9

Parents and Guardians,

We have had another full week of learning! Please see updates from the 5th grade team below. Fifth grade teams cashed in some dojo tickets with lunch bunch this week! It was a blast! Additionally, we have noticed as a grade level that participation in live meets have significantly dropped this week. If you could reiterate the expectation that when we are in live meets students are expected to be engaged and participate we would truly appreciate it!

Parents this is what active participation and engagement looks and sounds like. Engaged and participating looks like coming to class on time, leaving when dismissed, having cameras on, looking at the computer, raising hand to answer questions, sitting up at a table or in an acceptable work space, and working with materials such as, workbooks, work pages, Esperanza Rising, math manipulatives, etc. Engaged and participating sounds like a quite workspace free of distractions (please turn the t.v. off while in class), muted microphone until called on or asked to unmute, verbally answering questions, and responding to classmates and teachers. When you check on your child during class, please make sure he/she is doing the all of the above. Thank you in advance for helping us increase class participation and engagement!

From Ms. Tucci (ELA) This week students have used graphic organizers to write a character reaction paragraph as a class. Next week, students will be expected to write a character reaction paragraph on their own! If your student misses class on a day we read a chapter, it is their responsibility to catch up. On this website, under ELA there is a section for Esperanza Rising Read Alouds. Your child can go to this page to hear any chapter he/she has missed. Please encourage your child to utilize this site to help keep him/her caught up!

From Ms. Mastrocola (Math) This week students took part 1 of their unit 2 exam on volume! Also, we started to explore numerical expressions and equations. We practiced writing numerical expressions from number sentences and learned about the function of parenthesis. Please continue to remind your student about dreambox lessons it is important that they get that practice in! Also if you student needs extra support I have uploaded some new videos on the math page.

From Ms. McGann (SCI/SS) We continued our discussion about inherited traits and learned behaviors this week. We continued to talk about dogs and people, and added birds and insects to our discussion this week. As we finish up the week talking about our unique fingerprints, I have given all of the students a heads up that their Unit 2 Test over Characteristics of Living Things will be coming up this week. After we talk about genetics and make a few Punnett squares next week, we will take the Unit 2 test.

Friday 10/2

Hi Grown ups!

TGIF! We have had an awesome week of learning.

From Ms. Tucci (ELA)

This week we have begun our second Unit of Module 1: Human Rights Stories. We are beginning to take a deeper look at how characters respond to the same event and writing about it! Students are beginning to learn how to write character reaction paragraphs. They will be working toward writing a comparative essay describing how two characters react to the same event by the end of unit 2. Thank you for your help in achieving 97% of our school completing their Istation Assessment by the end of September! I will be sharing more information about opportunities for your child to practice skills through the Istation App soon!

From Ms. Mastrocola (Math)

This week in math we continued to work on finding the volume of composite figures. We also looked at volume in the context of real world problems. Next week we will take our assessment on volume. Dreambox participation has really gone up and I am so proud of students! Keep up the good work!

From Ms. McGann (SCI/SS)

This week has been a great start to Unit 2 of Quarter 1, Characteristics of Organisms. They are having fun comparing the traits of different species of dogs and humans. Next week we will discuss the behaviors and functions of traits in plants and insects. If your child is having issues with email, challenges with their camera for Live Meets, or any other struggles that we may need to be aware of, please do not hesitate to let us know. I hope the students are more aware of characteristics of living things as they go on their adventures this weekend.

Additionally, we want to thank all of you for the hard work you are putting in at home to help your child stay focused and up-to-date on their classwork. It takes a village, and as we transition to a blend of in-person and virtual learning, we want you to know how much we appreciate your flexibility with the process as well.

Thank you all for your continued support! Please reach out if you have any questions! We hope you have a restful weekend!

From Ms. Tucci (ELA)

This week in reading we finished up the first unit of Module 1. Students took both their Mid-Unit and End-Unit Assessments. Students showed me that they could identify two main ideas, supporting details and write a summary of an informational text. They also showed me they could have a discussion about threats to human rights depicted in our core text, Esperanza Rising. Please remember to have your child complete their IStation Assessment by Monday, September 29th! We need to collect this important information to determine what supports and extensions need to be put in place for your child.

From Ms. Mastrocola (Math)

We are in full swing learning about volume this week. We started the week by exploring volume of rectangular prisms through layers. Later on we tested the volume formula and learned about dimensions and the associate property. Later in the week we discussed the importance of units in math and everyday life! There has been an awesome increase in Dreambox which is great but please continue to remind your student that they should be completing 4-6 lessons a day!

From Ms. McGann (SCI/SS)

We completed our discussion about organisms and human body systems for Unit 1 in Science (Structures and Functions of Living Organisms). We will take our test over Unit 1 this upcoming week. I attached a Unit 1 review to the Sci/SS section of this site if your child wanted extra practice (in addition to their notes and the videos made available in their daily practice assignments). As always, feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. We enjoyed talking about the benefits we all share from the body systems, and look forward to discussing individual characteristics that make us unique in our next unit (Characteristics of Organisms).

Additionally, the county will have a student help desk available for any student that has a county chromebook or hotspot that needs to be repaired or replaced at the below listed location and on the below dates. FRIDAY 9/18

Hi Grown ups!

TGIF! We have had an awesome week of learning. Please reference subject material below!

From Ms. Tucci (ELA)

This week in reading we have read two new chapters of Esperanza Rising on Wednesday and today (Friday). I have posted read alouds of all chapters we have read so far in the reading tab of this website. If your child has missed class, please make sure they read or listen to the chapter they missed. I also sent out Istation information on Tuesday. The directions are posted above this message and in your child's google classroom. Please try to have your child complete this assessment ASAP. Thank you. Next week we will be finishing the first unit of module 1. We will be taking a two part assessment on Monday and Tuesday. Students will also be preparing for a discussion which will also be taken for a grade the Thursday and Friday.

From Ms. Mastrocola (Math)

This week in math we wrapped up unit 1 and have started unit 2. We explored what volume is, rectangular prisms and brainstormed some ways we could use volume in our everyday lives. We also discussed how math is all around us. Please reference the math page on the website to see new resource videos and standards posted. Additionally, please remind and encourage your student to get their Dreambox time in. Students are expected to get 4-6 Dreambox lessons completed a week. Dreambox gives us important data that helps us provide differentiated instruction for your student to helps strengthen their math skills. We have a competition going in fifth grade (red team is in the lead for now).

From Ms. McGann (SCI/SS)

We had a great week in Science. After talking about our breakfast traveling through the digestive system, and playing brain games to test our nervous system, we started analyzing what we eat and how we respond to our environment a little more. I am excited to see what critical thinking questions come up with our skeletal and muscular system discussion next week. The students should be keeping up with the vocabulary and our Human Body Systems graphic organizer in their Science Notebooks. If they need to review the content, office hours are available at 8:35am and 3:15pm during the week.

Thank you all for your continued support! Please reach out if you have any questions! We hope you have a restful weekend!

Friday 9/11

Hi Parents and Guardians,

This week has been a week full of learning! In EL we are diving into Esperanza Rising and have begun exploring how the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Esperanza Rising are connected. In math, students have been working on graphing and numerical patterns. And in Science, we have been continuing our learning on the human body systems.

Reminders from the Team

From Ms. Tucci (ELA):

Next week we will send out information, via email, about a diagnostic reading assessment for students. This assessment will be completed on your child's device at home. Your child will need your assistance to get started, however, after they are set-up they should complete the assessment 100% independently. The I-Station assessment tool is being used K-5 to help us get a better understanding of where your child is in their reading fluency, accuracy and comprehension. Be on the lookout for instructions and more information next week!

From Ms. Mastrocola (Math):

Please make sure students are working on Dreambox lessons throughout the week. It is a Wake County requirement that students complete 4-6 lessons per week. Dreambox is a math practice program found in your child's Wake ID portal. Please encourage your child do work on Dreambox for 15-20 minutes each day to ensure the required amount of lessons are completed by the end of the week. There is time built into the schedule for Dreambox practice from, 3:15-4:05pm daily. Lastly, there will be a math test on Tuesday, 9/15.

From Ms. McGann (Science/Social Studies):

We are beginning to see a trend that not all students are making it to all three live meetings each day. We are seeing specifically that students are not attending their Science/Social Studies live meets. Please remember that in 5th grade, Science is a tested subject and as of right now the County has stated we will hold EOGs (End of Grade Tests) this year. If your child is missing science class regularly, they are missing valuable core instruction that is needed to be prepared for their Science EOG at the end of the school year. Please encourage your child to attend all three live meets daily which are always held at 9:25am, 10:45am and 1:30pm.

Thank you all for your continued support! We hope you have a restful weekend!

The Fifth Grade Team,

Ms.Mastrocola (math) mmastrocola@wcpss.net

Friday 9/4

Hi Parents and Guardians,

We had an awesome week! We have some updates for you.

Digital Learning: We want you to know we understand and are sympathetic to the struggle and learning curve of digital learning. It is a new challenge but one we feel confident mastering. With that being said, your student may have experienced some growing pains this week as we launched instruction, that is normal and to be expected. We ask that you remind your students that the more we practice and get use to digital learning the better it will get. Please try your best to facilitate a positive and growth mindset at home. We are all in this together!

Attendance: Sometimes things come up and we totally get that. If your student is going to miss a live session, we ask that you let one of us know via email. Additionally, we start class right at the session times, so it is important that your student is online for our live meets. We are sympathetic to the new challenges parents are facing with distant learning so we have come up with some strategies you could use to help keep your student on task.

  1. Set alarms: You can set alarms for live meets on devices or create google reminders.

  2. Checklist: We post a checklist every day in google classroom for students it includes their schedule and all their assignments for the day as well as the link to those assignments. Please encourage your student to use it.

  3. We have also have the schedule posted in Google Calendars for each Team. If students go to their "Classwork" tab in Google Classroom, they will see at the top where they can click on their Google Calendar to see their schedule for the week.

Resource Website: As a team we have created a resource website for students and parents. This website includes helpful videos, unit standards, schedules and more! Check it out here: https://sites.google.com/wcpss.net/5thgraderesources/math We recommend bookmarking it to your device.

We hope everyone has a great weekend and rests up from a busy first week of instruction! We are looking forward to next week! 🙂

Friday 2/5/2021

Parents and Guardians,

This week the WCPSS school board has decided that students who are apart of the plan b group will be coming back to school in cohorts (weekly rotations) starting February 17th. The rotation will be one week in person, two weeks remote. At the moment cohorts are still being finalized. We will let you know as soon as they are completed so you are able to make arrangements with your schedules. Thank you for your patience as we work around this new change. We are doing our very best to support your students in a safe way. (VA students all year- this change does not affect you).

Additionally, we would appreciate it if you reminded your student to get their dreambox and istation time in each day. They are awesome programs that helps supplement students math and reading learning.

Have a great weekend.

The fifth grade team.

Friday 1/28/2021

Parents,

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for Family Engagement Night! We really enjoyed meeting with you all.

If you were unable to make it last night, here are a few links to some resources discussed to help your child with their Social Emotional wellbeing:

Additionally, there were some questions asked that we would like to answer:

  • Any update on End of Grade Testing? Yes, as of right now. The plan is to hold EOGs in the last 10 days of the school year.

  • Is there a remind101 or similar for parents to know the assignments and their due date? We do not have a program to remind parents of assignments and due dates, however, most assignments are posted in your child's Google Classroom. You will be able to see if the assignment has been completed and turned in there. If your child is missing an assignment that is not easily visible on Google Classroom, such as completing a Google Form, we will generally contact you through email or talking points to help us get your child caught up. Also, if you have any questions about missing assignments you can contact us through email or through Talking Points https://talkingpts.org/ . Talking Points offers an app you can download to your phone for easier communication.

Lastly an update for the week: The testing window for the middle of the year Istation assessment is officially closed. Thank you to all of you for helping to remind your child to get this completed!

As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact us.
