Journalism students are required to follow media policies and procedures mandated by the NCHSAA. The NCHSAA provides educational opportunities to journalism students by providing each member school with two media passes.

North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA)

The NCSMA is a statewide organization that promotes and advances scholastic journalism in North Carolina. It is an arm of the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It works with middle schools and high schools across the state, offering workshops, conferences, and competitions to support student journalists and their advisers. The association also advocates for freedom of the press and works to enhance journalism education.

The Quill and Scroll is an International Honor Society for High School Journalists. Their organization has been arounf since 1926. Charles B. Aycock High School joined this organization on January 10th, 1962.

The National Scholastic Press Association is a national community of student journalists and scholastic journalism advisers. The Governor staff became members in the spring of 2026.
