Most teaching staff at WCCS are issued with a laptop, currently this device will be the HP ProBook 440 G11.
Each staff desk workstation (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Audio) can be connected to your staff notebook using a single USB Type C cable leading from the back of the dock into the laptop. Your laptop will charge when plugged into the dock on your desk, this means the charger included with the laptop can be used for home or other locations. There’s no need to shut down your laptop. When you need to take it somewhere, simply unplug from the charger or dock and then close the lid. It will automatically go to sleep. Depending on how long it’s been asleep for, you can wake it up by either opening the lid, or pressing the power button.
When you connect your staff device, to an external monitor or projector you will be able to choose how you would like to use the extra screen space.
In order to choose the projection mode you would like to use press <Win>+<P>.
After pressing the keyboard combination you will be shown this menu.
If you just want to use your laptop screen choose "PC screen only".
To show the same objects on both screens choose "Duplicate" To get extra screen working area choose "Extend". You are then able to display different windows or programs on each screen. This also allows you to show a video or content on a classroom projector whilst having different content open on your notebook screen.
To only use the external monitor choose "Second screen only".
In order to connect to a classroom projector and speakers you will use the HDMI cable found on the front desk. Plug this into the HDMI port of your staff computer. Once you are connected to the projector via HDMI use the 'Win+P', projection mode keyboard shortcut, to either extend or duplicate your laptop screen. If you find your screen is turning off and going black (timing out) too quickly you can change a setting in power options to extend the time.
Some classrooms contain a television instead of a projector. In order to connect to the television you will use the HP dock. Plug in the dock to the USB Type C port on the right side of you computer. Once you are connected to the television via the dock, turn on the TV on via the remote using the on button (1), once the television is on then press the source button (2), an input dialogue will appear on the screen, using the arrow keys (3) scroll down to HDMI 1 and press the OK button. Once the input has been selected use the 'Win+P', projection mode keyboard shortcut, to either extend or duplicate you laptop screen.
Once you computer is connected you can adjust the volume of the television using the remote by pressing the volume button (4).
Laptop sound by default will use the inbuilt laptop speakers, unless you are connected to a HDMI cable. Should you find that your sound is not coming through classroom speakers (or the required playback device), you can modify this by changing the default playback device.
To check or change your playback device, right click the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, and then left click the item labelled “Playback devices”
This will open the “Sound” control window. You can select which playback device you want sound to come out of, by clicking on it and then clicking the “Set Default” button at the bottom.
Available options will vary depending on what is plugged in.
Intel Display Audio HDMI 1 – This sends sound out of classroom speakers when you’re connected to the projector via HDMI cable as described above.
(Speakers) Realtek High Definition Audio – These are your built in laptop speakers. You can set these as default to get sound when docked in your staffroom if you don’t have external speakers connected to your dock.
Speakers) USB Audio CODEC – This is the speaker socket on your dock. If you have external speakers or headphones connected to your dock, select this option.
The green tick with “Default Device” indicates which option you currently have selected. In this screenshot the dock speaker port (USB audio CODEC) is selected.
Some applications you may want for teaching have been made available for you to perform a self-service install via Windows Software Center, which allows you to install pre-approved software. If a program isn't listed, you should log a job to ask that the application be considered for suitability and compatibility with the IT network . Please do not install other applications yourself without approval.
Software Center is located in the Start Menu, most easily found by searching in the windows start bar. Once you’ve opened Software Center, you will see a list of applications. Some of these have been automatically deployed as part of the initial setup of your machine. If there is an application in the list you wish to install, simply select it from list from the application, and then press “Install” and wait for installation to complete before closing or turning off your device.
The fingerprint scanner (black rectangle found in top left corner of the touchpad) is a handy way to log on and unlock your computer.
To start the setup process:
Click in the search bar at the bottom left of your screen (next to the start menu) and type “finger”.
Click on the result at the top of the list titled “Set up fingerprint sign-in” (you may need to wait a moment for search results to fully appear). In the window that opens, click the “Setup” button under the “Fingerprint” title and follow the onscreen instructions.
