There will be two classroom sections of Driver’s Education taught this year, and are as follows:
1st Quarter Classroom 1st and 2nd hour
2nd Quarter Driving 1st, 2nd hour, and 3rd hour
3rd Quarter Classroom 1st hour
4th Quarter Driving 1st and 2nd, and 3rd hours
Driving is also done after school, as well as some summer time driving.
West Central is now also providing behind the wheel driving during some 3rd hour classes. Students may be taken out of the classroom one day a week to drive. If the student is in a core class 3rd hour, (English, Math, or Science), they will not be eligible to drive during this time. Classes that students can be taken from are all elective classes. Depending on holidays, shortened days, or school cancellations, driving during 3rd hour will take approximately 12 to 16 weeks to complete.
NOTE: Due to the new driving periods (2nd and 3rd Hour), and the length of time it will take to complete, some younger students will be driving before older students. It is the same for driving during the 2nd and 4th quarters, as these times are specifically for the classes that just finished the classroom portion of driver's ed.
All tuition fees must be paid before a student is allowed to finish the driving portion of the class. They may complete their driving time with the instructor, but I will not pass them in the state of Illinois' system until the tuition has been paid.
If you have any questions at all about when your student will drive, have your student ask me, or feel free to email at the email address provided.

CELL PHONES
No driver in the state of Illinois is allowed to use their cell phone while driving unless 21 years of age or older with a hands free device. Therefore I have made it a rule that I will not allow cell phones out in my classroom. If a student is caught with their cellular device out, they will be dropped down the driving list. Please email me at the above address with any questions you may have regarding this policy.
Each student must complete 30 hours of classroom study to pass the course. If too much time is missed, they will be dropped and have to take the class again. Unfortunately, this does include excused absences from school. The state requires the students to be in the classroom. This does not mean they will receive an F on their report card. They will be placed into a study hall, and scheduled to take the next session of driver's education. The state of Illinois requires 30 hours of classroom time to complete Driver’s Ed.
PERMITS
Students will be able to receive their driving permits when they turn 15, provided they pass the online test and the vision test. If your student needs corrective lenses they must have them at the time the vision test is administered. They will all know a couple days ahead of time before they take the vision test. If they fail the vision test, they will have to retake it at a DMV, as the vision machine I use is on loan.
During the first week of class we will be completing the necessary work for the students to receive their permits. There is a fee of $20 dollars per student to receive their permit. Please do not pay this fee at registration as it is for the state, and not for the school. Students will be asked to bring it in with their applications, which they need to sign, as well as their guardian. Checks can be made out to the Secretary of State. The student may bring in their 20 dollars, along with their signed application on the day of their 15th birthday. I can then pick up the permit at the DMV facility.
Once the students have their permits, they are required to have them for 9 months, regardless of age, before they are eligible to get their license. They need to have 50 hours driving time recorded with an adult, 10 of which are to be night time driving. Each student is also required to have 6 hours of driving with an instructor.
