Registrations for the 2026 Itinerant Music Lessons Programme are now closed. Email music@wc.school.nz to go on the waitlist.
Note: If you cannot attend your lesson, you MUST let us know via music@wc.school.nz ASAP. If you miss THREE lessons without a valid explanation, you may loose your spot in the programme.
If you have an assessment or similar during your lesson time, please let us know as soon as you find out, as we may be able to swap your lesson time with another student.
Please be ready outside your studio with your instrument 5mins before your lesson time.
Please email music@wc.school.nz to be placed on the waiting list if you miss out on a place in the programme.
These lessons are funded based on the school roll and therefore we only have a limited number of places available. We typically have two to three times as many registrations as we have hours available.
We operate the following system of allocation.
1. Precedence is given to those students who are taking music as a curriculum subject. This is because Itinerant lessons are part of the delivery of the Music Curriculum. Those in senior classes are allocated first as these lessons are the basis of several of their Internal Assessments. Next are junior classes in year level order.
2. We will next prioritise those that are also involved in our Co-curricular programme.
3. Final spots are given all others that register in the order registrations were received.
In all cases we try to consider those that have indicated financial hardship.
The Itinerant Programme was initially implemented as an attempt to level the playing field for those that were not in a position to have private music lessons, and therefore allow music to become a more inclusive subject. It is with this spirit that we offer these lessons. We suggest that if you are in a position to take to private lessons, you do, as it is unlikely that we will be able to offer all who register a place in the programme.
PLEASE NOTE - THOSE THAT CURRENTLY HAVE LESSONS, MUST RE-REGISTER EACH YEAR.
We are happy to offer advice and contacts for local teachers that we recommend and run a waiting list for students that are not offered a lesson in the first instance. Please music@wc.school.nz to be placed on the waiting list.
STUDENTS OFFERED A PLACE IN THE WELLINGTON COLLEGE ITINERANT MUSIC PROGRAMME MUST JOIN A CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC GROUP ON THE INSTRUMENT ON WHICH THEY ARE HAVING LESSONS.
String Instruments – orchestra; Woodwind/Brass Instruments – Orchestra or Concert Band; Saxophones – Concert Band or Jazz Bands.
Drummers should consider joining the Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band, and must participate in the Drum Ensemble.
Guitarists can either form a Rock Band or join the Ukulele Orchestra.
In the case of beginners, students will be required to join a group once their teacher feels that they are ready.
