Habitual Truancy means:
being absent 30 or more consecutive hours in one month without a legitimate excuse.
being absent 42 or more hours in one month without a legitimate excuse.
being absent 72 or more hours in one school year Without a legitimate excuse.
When habitually truant, the district will select members of the AIT (Absence Intervention Team) and make three attempts to secure guardian's participation on the absence intervention team within seven days of the triggering absence.
Chronically Absent:
As of September 30, 2025, Ohio law defines a “chronically absent” student as “missing at least ten per cent of the minimum number of hours required in the school year”. The minimum number of hours referenced are also defined in Ohio law. Time missed from school for any reason, including excused and unexcused absences, will contribute to chronic absenteeism.
Students only need to miss 2-3 days per month to be chronically absent by the end of the year. Schools and districts can provide support to the student and his or her family before the student has missed 10 percent of the school year.
When a student is excessively absent, the district will file a complaint in Juvenile Court. WB will hold mandatory attendance meetings. The meetings/gathering is an attempt to build awareness and reduce parent referrals to the courts.
Excused Absences
Students may be excused from school for one or more of the following reasons and will be provided an opportunity to make-up missed school work and/or tests:
A. personal illness (a written physician’s statement verifying the illness may be
required)
B. illness in the family necessitating the presence of the child
C. quarantine of the home
D. death in the family

F. observation or celebration of a bona fide religious holiday
G. out-of-state travel (up to a maximum twenty-four (24) hours per school year that the student's school is open for instruction) to participate in a District-approved enrichment or extracurricular activity Any classroom assignment missed due to the absence shall be completed by the student. If the student will be absent for twenty-four (24) or more consecutive hours that the student’s school is open for instruction, a classroom teacher shall accompany the student during the travel period to provide the student with instructional assistance.

I. medically necessary leave for a pregnant student in accordance with Policy 5751
