The function of the West Babylon JHS Music Department is two fold; performing group classes and non-performing group classes. Our performing ensembles (band, chorus and orchestra) are designed for students who want to pursue particular musical interests either through singing or playing instruments. Our non-performing music classes are structured more like a traditional classroom environment, allowing students to take general music courses that fulfill the requirements for graduation from 8th grade. Students who do not participate in one of our performing groups will be recommended by default to a non performing group course selection appropriate for their grade level. (Currently, music is optional for grade 6 students only, required for students in grades 7 & 8.)

Whichever route you choose for your child, the West Babylon JHS Music Department offers a variety of courses that are designed to help students meet or exceed the NYS Standards for the Arts. We thrive on our ability to improve the whole child, by providing students with an aesthetic education program that enables them to apply creative, cognitive, critical thinking, and collaborative mindset skills. We have many opportunities available for further musical enrichment via our partnerships with professional music organizations (such as SCMEA, NYSSMA, LISFA, and NYSCAME). Individual growth and achievement is encouraged through participation in these affiliate programs, as well as through private lessons outside of school.
