In 3rd grade students will focus on 6 units of study in reading: Building a Reading Life, Reading to Learn: Grasping Main Ideas and Text Structures, Character Studies, Research Clubs, Series, and Mysteries.
In the beginning of unit, students are setting themselves up for a successful reading life both in school and at home. They are provided with tools, strategies, and skills to become flourishing readers.
The next part of the unit shows readers how to comprehend a story. Readers learn how making higher-level predictions, retelling stories, and visualizing as they read all guide them to better comprehension of the story.
The final part of the unit teaches readers how to tackle more challenging texts by using grit, using textual clues to figure out hard words, making sense of figurative language, and raising the level of questions to determine deeper meaning.
This unit begins with students determining importance in Expository texts. They preview nonfiction and look for structure. Then students find main ideas and the supporting details.
The next part of the unit helps readers lift the level of thinking about their texts. Readers will learn how to approach nonfiction text as learners and teachers, and begin to form their own opinions about the text. They will use these skills to then lift the level of conversation they have about their texts.
The last part of this unit shows readers how to synthesize and grow ideas about narrative nonfiction. Readers will learn how to use text structure to hold on to meaning in narrative nonfiction. They will then learn how to tackle hard words that may complicate meaning in their texts. Readers will also summarize narrative nonfiction. Then, we will move on to biographies and seek underlying ideas in them. Finally, readers will identify hybrid texts and learn how to adjust their reading accordingly.
