Independent Drawing at Home & School
Students have sketchbooks at school that they can draw in. When a student has finished the project we are working on, and they have extra time during art class, they get their sketchbook to work in. During this time students take the concepts we have learned about in art class regarding the elements of art, use of materials, or cultural and historical references, and apply it to their own unique drawings. This is a great time for students to continue to develop their own unique artistic voice, as well as an opportunity to experiment and grow as an independent artist.

When working in their sketchbooks, students are encouraged to think about the elements of line, shape, color, value, texture, space, and form, as well as what art materials they think will work best for what they want to draw. Students can think about artists that inspire them, as well as time periods throughout art history. Students may choose any subject matter or design that they would like to include in their book. They should reflect on things we have talked about or learned in art class, and practice them, or use them in a unique new way in their book.

Ideas of things you can find around the house to draw from observation:
-A favorite toy.
-Fruit, vegetables, or flowers.
-A pet or stuffed animal.
-Members of the family.
-Look at yourself in the mirror.
-What you see out the window.
-A chair or other piece of furniture.
-A spoon, fork, mug, cup, or bowl.
-A pair of shoes, a sneaker, or boots.
-Socks or mittens.
-A stack of books, a book cover, or an open book.
-A crayon or pencil.
-A can or jar.
-A favorite food.
-A TV or computer.
-A watch or a piece of jewelry.
-Something outside on a nice day, like a flower or a tree.
It is also valuable for artists to use their imagination or draw from memory. Artists can think of an idea, and put it on a piece of paper to tell a visual story.
