Lesson Components


Independent Reading

Child reads on their own from a collection of books at their reading level.

Purpose:

  • Provides opportunity to independently apply reading strategies.

  • Challenges the reader to work on his/her own and to use strategies on a variety of text.

  • Provides opportunity to use strategies on extended text.

Word Study

Woven through all the lesson components the teacher has an opportunity to help children notice and use letters and words.

Purpose:

  • Helps children use visual aspects of print.

  • Provides opportunities to notice and use letters and words that are embedded in text.

  • Provides opportunities to manipulate letters and make words.

  • Helps children link sounds with letters and letter clusters.

Guided Reading

Guided reading is an instructional setting that enables a teacher to work with a small group of students to help them learn effective reading strategies for processing a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency.

Purpose:

  • Provides opportunity to problem solve while reading for meaning.

  • Provides opportunity to use and develop independent reading strategies while reading.

  • Provides opportunity for teacher guidance, demonstration, and explanation.

Independent Writing

Children write on their own, including retelling, labeling, lists, etc.

Purpose:

  • Provides opportunity for the independent production of written text.

  • Provides chance to write for different purposes.

  • Builds ability to write words and use punctuation.

  • Fosters creativity and the ability to compose.
