Fawn Nguyen - United States of America

Fawn begins her work this year with Amplify as a Math Advanced Team Specialist. She was a math coach for a K-8 school district for three years and prior to that, a middle school teacher for 30 years. Fawn was the 2014 Ventura County Teacher of the Year. In 2009, she was awarded the Math Teacher Hero from Raytheon. In 2005, she was awarded the Sarah D. Barder Fellowship from the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

Fawn blogs about her lessons and classroom teaching at fawnnguyen.com. She also authors three websites for teachers: visualpatterns.org, between2numbers.com, and chewablemath.com. She serves as one of the editors for mathblogging.org.

Fawn has been a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator at math conferences throughout the USA. She has been a part of the UC-Santa Barbara Mathematics Project Leadership team since 2005.

In 2012, she co-founded the Math Teachers' Circle in Thousand Oaks, California. Fawn served a three-year term as a committee member of NCTM's Professional Development Services Committee (PDSC) during 2015-2018.

John Rowe - Australia

John is a high school mathematics teacher from Adelaide, South Australia, who is passionate about finding ways to harness the natural curiosity students bring to the classroom and presenting learning in enticing ways. 

He joined Desmos in 2019 to develop the Middle School Curriculum and is a part of the team currently writing the High School Curriculum. Prior to Desmos, John led professional learning focussed on engaging students in rich discussions about mathematical thinking. In this role, he wrote and released a free eBook for mathematics teachers, Hook Line Sinker. Through this book, John collated his teaching resources and created a simple framework to explain how they can be used to spark curiosity and invite students to go deeper with their learning.

Melinda is of Ngāti Hau, Ngāti Kahu, and Ngāti Whakaue descent. Melinda teaches and researches at the Faculty of Education and Social Work at The University of Auckland. She leads a number of research projects focused on better understanding the effects of Māori student motivation and academic engagement, culturally sustaining teaching, localised curricula, and enduring school-family-community partnerships for learning.

 In this session, Professor Webber will discuss her research findings related to three important educational questions:

What motivates ākonga to engage, persist, and thrive at school, even when faced with academic and social challenges?

How can whānau help their tamariki to achieve at school and beyond, thereby increasing their academic efficacy, expectations, and aspirations?

What kaiako practices help ākonga to see that their culture, language, and identity are assets and relevant to their learning and success?

Discussion Panel - New Zealand

There are many changes ahead in Mathematics and Statistics education. This keynote talk will feature a panel of experts (to be announced) who will share their knowledge and expertise about the Curriculum Refresh,  Matauranga Maori, NCEA changes and the new Numeracy Standard relating to both Primary and Secondary contexts. They will answer a range of questions submitted by attendees.
