Leo Club

The Leo Club will be going to Liberty State Park in Jersey City on Sunday, November 6 to walk with hundreds of people affected by Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and raise money for research to eradicate this disease.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure.

The JDRF One Walk is a fantastic way to make a difference in the lives of millions of people affected by T1D. For at least that one day, they will look around and see all the support they have from their friends, family and community.

On Walk Day, everyone can have fun and celebrate how much closer to a cure we are because of their efforts. The Leos have been walking with the Miracle for Matthew team for many years. Twelve-year-old Matthew was diagnosed with T1D at age one.

The Leo Club would like to invite any staff members whose lives are touched by diabetes or who want to join in the fight against T1D to walk with us at Liberty State Park on November 6. It is a two-mile walk. There are lots of activities and information about T1D at the event. Please reach out to Jessica Fishman if you want to join us or for more information. The bus leaves Wayne Hills at 8:30 AM.

Donations can be made through this link by clicking the "donate" tab, or by using the attached sponsor form. Checks made out to JDRF and cash can be brought to Jessica in Room 227 by Friday, November 4 or to the walk on the day of the trip.

Once you join the Google Classroom, please click on the Alpha Application (following the instruction on the website) to officially sign up and join.

What is The Leo Club?

The Wayne Hills Leo Club is dedicated to community service under the sponsorship of the Wayne Lions Club and Lions Club International, a group of 1.4 million men and women who believe that kindness matters. LEO stands for: Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity.

Each year, the Leo Club raises money and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by participating in the October Walk for a world without Type 1 Diabetes. This year’s walk takes place at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, and is scheduled for November 1.

Our Leos also help in the fall and spring to clean up Camp Marcella, a residential summer campground designed specifically for children and teens with blindness, visual impairments, and special needs.

Additionally, Wayne Hills Leos celebrate the winter holidays with employees at Foundation for the Handicapped in Wayne, which provides long-term employment for developmentally disabled adults. We usually bring music, baked treats, and gifts which Santa helps to distribute, but best of all, the kids spend time getting to know each of the special people who work at the Foundation. We are still figuring out how to celebrate during these challenging times.

The Leos volunteer at Laurelwood Arboretum, also right here in Wayne. We have weeded, rebuilt a rock wall and planted the Fairy Garden. The work is done outside, so we are hopeful that we will be able to help them out again this year.

For Veterans Day we have written letters of gratitude to Veterans and First Responders. We have collected paper goods and toiletry items for the Wayne Interfaith Network Food Pantry. And this past summer we donated $100 to help feed Wayne’s First Responders during COVID-19 testing.
