ONE BOOK, ONE SCHOOL
Creating A Culture of Reading In Every Home
Dear Pines Lake Parents/Guardians,
This month, Pines Lake will launch an all-school book club called One School, One Book. Every family who has a student in Kindergarten through 5th grade will receive a copy of the same book and read it at home during the months of January and February.
One School, One Book is a novel program in which children at all grade levels will be listening to the same book. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood and enjoyed by everyone.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader. But it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone including students, parents, teachers and administrative staff will be participating. We will all reap the many benefits.
Today, we had an assembly introducing the book and all the fun events planned for the next three weeks. The oldest child in the family received a copy of Fenway and Hattie by Victoria Coe. With this letter and the book you will find a reading schedule so you can keep up at home. We plan to read a chapter or two a night which will take approximately 10 minutes per chapter. Chapters can be read outloud or listened to on the google site found in the weekly newsletter or in Library Media google classrooms.
In school, your child will answer daily trivia questions and participate in Media discussions about the book to encourage attentive listening. At home, students can do the activities on the attached BINGO board. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included. Everyone will be talking about Fenway and Hattie!
We know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. We hope you will talk with your children sometime in the days to come about Fenway, Hattie, Fetch Man and Squirrel. When a whole school reads a book, there is a lot to talk about. With your help, we are truly building a community of readers at Pines Lake!
Sincerely yours,
