The National Honor Society chapter of Wayne Central High School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a 5-member Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each November.
Students in the 11th or 12th grades are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 90% or above. Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form, obtain one Letter of Recommendation, and write a personal statement. All of these things provide the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.
To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council reviews each student's application to determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule. The National Honor Society Advisor does not have any voting power and acts only as a facilitator for the Faculty Council during selection.
In a non-selection situation, the National Honor Society Advisor notifies the student of the decision as well as the reasons for non-selection. The student may appeal the decision. All appeals must be made by the student directly to the National Honor Society Advisor. The appeal must be made in writing, to the chapter advisor. The appeal will be reviewed by the chapter advisor as well as the principal. Following this review, a majority vote will be required for membership.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection. Students will sign the Membership Contract upon induction verifying that they understand and are committed to upholding these standards throughout the course of their membership.
This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings, held monthly during the school year, and participation in the chapter service projects(s). Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter advisors, Mrs. Jaime McKnight and Mrs. Erin Schlegel.
