Hello 5th graders!
This week, we're digging into the notes and musical concepts we already know, as well as our newest rhythm, the dotted quarter note.
We've always been used to seeing du-de's (8th notes) in pairs; this week, like last, we'll work on them individually. Remember that by themselves they are each worth only 1/2 beat; the other half beat can be made up with an 8th rest. As a reminder, an 8th note by itself looks like this:
If it happens on the first half of the beat, it's a "du". If it happens "off" the beat, it's a "de."
One of the most common times when an 8th note will happen off the beat is when it is preceded by a dotted quarter note. The dotted quarter is worth one and a half beats. It's just like tying together a quarter and an eighth note.
This rhythm will show up in the first movement of "Three Days of a Knight"!
