Hello 5th grade string players!
This week we are reviewing our newest concept, extensions.
C# on the G string
G# on the D string
F# on the C string
(basses only: G# on the G string)
And... with this comes some new scales!
THE KEY OF A MAJOR has 3 sharps: F#, C# and G#. Violins can start on LOW A and go two octaves, to the A string and then again to the A on the E string!
The violas and cellos can now play a two octave D scale by starting with D on the C string and ending with D on the A string.
We will review some tunes and scales on pages 12 - 13, and carefully review the spot in Winter Wonderland where those extensions occur. There are also a few spots in Winter Sleigh Ride where violin 2, 3 and viola have C# extensions!
In orchestra, we'll be sure we can get all the way through our concert pieces, focusing on the spots that need review, and on breathing, counting and leading. The concerts are coming soon!
The assignment for next week is concert songs, and pages 14-15 in the book! Can you organize good practicing for yourself without a practice schedule?
