Hello 3rd graders!
This week in lessons, we:
Reviewed the 5 steps of good position
Reviewed pages 4 and 5 and the DAD song
Noticed these musical symbols on page 5:
Treble Clef Alto Clef Bass Clef 4/4 Time Signature Bar Line
Finally, we started to learn two new notes on the D string: E and F#.
E is the red tape. Put 1st finger (pointer) on the D string.
F# ("F sharp") is the yellow tape. This is played as follows:
Violin/viola: 2 fingers on D string; Cello: 3 fingers on D string. Bass: 4 fingers on D string

(I made these during COVID so if I refer to sending in recordings, please ignore that.. but watch these videos with instrument in hand if you want a mini-private lesson at home!)
This week: use these new notes to play "Hot Cross Buns & Mary Had a Little Lamb" (worksheet handed out and also attached below)!!
And -- if you'd like a bonus challenge, try writing your own DAD song (see "reading D and A handouts" below!)
KEEP READING... more good stuff below :)
PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT WEEK:
Hot Cross Buns/Mary Had a Little Lamb!
& if you want, write your own DAD Song
SEE BELOW for helpful definitions/pictures to help you review at home,
as well as copies of the handouts in case they got lost!
This is the treble clef. It is at the start of all VIOLIN music.
This is the alto clef. It is at the start of all VIOLA music.
This is the bass clef. It is at the start of all CELLO and BASS music.
This is a 4/4 time signature. It tells you that every MEASURE (section divided by a bar line) has 4 beats.
The arrow is pointing to a BAR LINE. In most classes, we added bar lines after every four beats in our OPEN STRING SONGS (green page). If we didn't do this in your class, can you add the bar lines at home?
This is the correct shape of the violin/viola hand position. Notice that her thumb is just peeking over the side of the fingerboard and is sitting next to the first tape, (which is red on your instruments).
Notice also that the wrist is down and relaxed.
On the left is the correct position for cello and bass players. Notice that her thumb is hidden on the back of the neck.
Now compare it to the incorrect position on the right. See the difference? Remember to place your thumb on the soft velcro located on the back of your instrument's neck!
