Hi 3rd graders,
If you're reading this before String Jamboree, good luck! You will be great! If you're reading it after the concert, awesome job preparing for this big and exciting event!!
We are excited to move on to new material! Here is what we are doing in class this week (might vary slightly between classes):
1 - Reflecting on the concert, and listening to some karate belts! In some classes, we might watch the Ode To Joy video below.
2 - trying #66 to practice reading the "pepperoni pizza" rhythm with du-de's and du's (eighth notes & quarter notes). #67 follows the same rhythm, but with notes stepping DOWN the D scale!
3 - trying #68 to practice reading the "dog chase the cat chase the..." rhythm, then realizing that #69 follows the same pattern going UP the D scale. Remember to change notes on every "dog!"
4 - Starting #89, Bile 'em Cabbage Down. We looked at Part A only today. Notice that it follows the "dog chase the cat chase the..." rhythm, changing notes on each measure (or "dog") UNTIL the very end when the "cat" wins the game! We will practice only playing the notes that change, then playing the whole thing!
5- doing some note WRITING on white boards. Do you remember your sentences? Can you find the line and space notes?
6 - listening to "Frere Jacques" and trying to name that tune! We will start this one next week, but feel free to label and practice it if you're wanting to get in some more practice minutes for our March Madness practice challenge!
Practice assignment:
Practice your FLASHCARDS. How many notes can you get correct? Also try the site below to really become a great note reader:
Practice #89 A "Bile 'em Cabbage Down"
OPTIONAL: label and practice #88 "Frere Jacques"
If you'd like an extra bonus challenge song for St. Patrick's Day, check out and print out "Have You Been to Ireland?" below!
Here are two super fun videos to watch and be inspired by!
Watch what happens as this gets going! Which was bigger, our performance at String Jamboree or this one? :)
This is the piece we started in the book, "Bile 'em Cabbage Down"!
