Hi 3rd graders!
CONGRATULATIONS on your in-school concerts and Happy New Year! You should be so proud of yourselves!
And now we are moving fully into bow-land. You should be comfortable holding your bow at the balance point, and we will be using bow tubes this week. If you didn't see last week's post which included a photo of a bow tube as well as a video of how to put one on, they are included again below. You can use an empty toilet paper roll from home, or cut a wrapping paper tube, etc! Using a bow tube helps you focus on how it feels to move your bow in a straight line in the correct spot on the string. It's an important part of learning the bow. We recommend you start each practice by doing some long, slow bows in a tube.
This week in class, we will:
pluck up and down the D scale on page 11, noticing how different high D and low D look on the page
sightread a tune on page 12, looking at patterns of how the notes move
Do Rosin Raps on the rosin!! By doing these, we get really good at identifying the symbols for up and down bow:
Tip: these are WAY more fun to play if you use the accompaniments on MakeMusic! If you don't have an account yet, remind your parent that you'd like one!
If you aren't able to make a tube at home, you can also practice these by moving your bow up and down on your rosin.
After doing our rosin raps we will work on pages 16-17, then try our HCB/DAD duet with the bow!
Finally, we will cut out flashcards to start learning how to read the notes of the D scale. Every day that you practice this week, flip through the flashcards and try to identify the note OPEN D. If you get really good at that one, work on E! And keep going, up the scale.
Your assignment for this week is: Pages 11, 16 & 17 with the bow. And use your flashcards! Have fun!
